Has anyone had this? Have you had operations or treatment for this?

mum had bowel cancer, she had an op to have tumor removed followed by chemo, has been clear for 3 years

AttilaTheAntiHun · 21/06/2008 10:30

Hi, my story not reassuring so I won't share it. Just to say that if bowel C is caught early it is likely the patient will make a complete recovery. Big op, lots of chemo, but then well. hope you are ok.

paddingtonbear1 · 21/06/2008 11:04

My mum had it, she had an op and treatment. The op was fine, she didn't need a colostomy bag. The chemo was harsh, but diff people react differently.
Just to second Attila, if it's caught early the prognosis should be good.
My mum's friend had hers discovered when she went in for a different op! They took the tumour out at the same time and she didn't need chemo.

Chocolateteapot · 21/06/2008 11:18

My Dad had it a couple of years ago. It was caught early, had op to remove tumor and nothing further was needed.

devonblue · 21/06/2008 11:20

Ex DP'f father had this 5 years ago. Had an op, can't remember about chemo. Had a all-clear scan a year or so after, and AFAIK no more issues with it. Good luck.

Dh had it 2 years ago. Big op to remove tumour after a 7 day course of radiotherapy to shrink it. He had a temporary ileostomy and then a reversal op 6 months later. He's all clear so far with no recurrance or anything but does have some bowel problems because they had to remove part of his rectum also. Has to be extremely careful about his diet.

Hi Candlewax,
My life is in turmoil atm. My Dh was diagnosed with bowel and liver cancer in March. He had very few symptems leading up to this, so its been an enormous shock. He had the primary tumour on his bowel removed on the 22nd April, and has a temp ileostomy bag. He has 3 lesions on his liver, they say they are all resectable, can be surgically removed. Atm he has just started 3 months chemo, then in Sept/Oct he goes to London for liver surgery, this will be backed up by 3 more months chemo. Its been a real rollercoaster esp with three 10 yr olds. They have said its not curable, but treatable, he feels very well and looks good. I am sorry that you or someone obviously close to you is going through this. I am here if you need someone to talk to, please cat me if you would like to. xxx

Thank you everyone for your replies. I saw a surgeon yesterday who examined me and he told me he was "concerned" about the blood in my rectum. I have a definite prolapse he told me and he asked me to check both sides of my family for bowel cancer and let him know. He has booked me in on 2nd July for a camera investigation to see what else might or might not be there. He asked me to ring him once the photos had been taken so he can go and collect them and then to ring him in the afternoon so he can talk me through what he is going to do and to book me into the first available bed.

He is a rather lovely looking guy too, shame he spent his time talking to my bum! He made me laugh though, he told me he would be doing a face lift on my bottom!

I suppose I was thinking/hoping that IF there is more there, that it can be treated if this has been caught early enough.

I have had cervical cancer (CIN3) which was operated on and I received laser treatment after the operation and that has been clear ever since.

At the back of my mind is the "what if" - but I hope that if there is a "what if", it can be treated.

I am in a bloody minded mood. I have a SENDIST Tribunal in November and my mind is thinking I am too bloody busy to deal with anything else but that at the moment, come back later when I have time to deal with it.

Hi Candlewax, I know its easy to say but try not to panic at this point, there could be a number of things causing the blood loss. What is a Sendist?

Candlewax · 21/06/2008 23:36

Hi Triplets, SENDIST stands for Special Educational Needs & Disability Tribunal. I have a son with Aspergers Syndrome and I am trying to get him a placement in a special school and our local education authority (LEA) have named his old school on his Statement, so I am challenging this at Tribunal at SENDIST.

Gosh Candlewax, you too have alot on your plate, good luck with that xx

ThingOne · 24/06/2008 23:32

Hi Candlewax
I am currently being treated for rectal cancer. Diagnosed last August after months of pain. Five weeks of radio/two weeks of chemo in Autumn followed by major op in December. I had my anus and rectum removed due to the low site of my tumour. This obviously means I have a permanent colostomy. Follow up is 12 cycles chemo. I have one secondary on liver to be removed in two weeks. Once better from that I have the remainder of my 12 cycles of chemo.
Come back when you know but bear in mind I may be busy with surgery and recovery, so keep on bumping until I come onto the thread if it is cancer.
Good luck!
