Has anyone experienced lasting aphasia or alexia after concussion?

I had a head injury (concussion) and post concussion syndrome a decade ago which was dreadful and gave me a breakdown.

I lost my ability to see in my mind's eye after (called aphantasia), and also my ability to read the written word (aphasia, specifically called alexia as a loss of reading).

I'm still struggling with it now. I hate it, and it actually makes me feel like I'm just looking at symbols on a page like a foreign language at times.

Has anyone else ever had aphasia? How bad has it been, even after a recovery period?

These screenshots are from a Google Ai search but explain it more clearly.

I often worry I might lose my ability to think in language too, or understand. I find it quite scary at times 😞

Are you getting any NHS therapy to help you recover? Your brain can relearn how to read but you’ll need to work at it. For example, get kids books from the library with big print and teach yourself to recognise the letters. 15 mins a day will make a massive difference.

Thank you, I actually read a lot of (boring) stuff for my job as an editor, but occasionally I feel as though my brain retains no information whatsoever. And I have to reread a paragraph about three times to understand it.

So, while it's definitely something that's improved, it's been a journey to get back to where it was. I do find too that I get "brain strain" when I try to read something too difficult to understand, or i think too "hard" as though it's too much energy to process the words etc.

But I like your good suggestions, thank you 😊 I'll definitely try to be reading with my youngest daughter more too for her phonics learning, it might jump start my brain a bit 😄 😉

I have stress induced Aphasia (the word finding kind) linked to my autism. I can often be heard shouting ‘I can’t find the thingy for the whatsit!’

It’s incredibly annoying so I can’t imagine how much worse yours is :( I’m so sorry you’re struggling with that.
