Nightly sorrow

What is it about the night time that makes me ponder the meaning of life and death and everything in between?

I can have the best day but, as soon as night falls, I become despondent, dejected, morose and fearful.

In addition to insomnia, it's a hard and lonely place to be when all the world is sleeping.

I’m so sorry you are experiencing this. I am at heart quite a melancholy person, but don’t find the night any more likely to encourage these thoughts- if anything being tucked in my bed, in my cosy bedroom, makes me feel safer and more generous towards the world.

Are you ok mental-health wise otherwise? How is your sleep?

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 06/05/2026 00:42

Sorry- I’ve just seen you mention insomnia. That is very difficult, and absolutely nights where I’ve had trouble sleeping bring on troubling thoughts.

NightMove · 06/05/2026 00:46

@BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop insomnia is a cruel mistress, for sure!

I don’t have any solutions but - and I’m not saying this flippantly, it really does work for me - counting my blessings always cheers me up. We have evolved to focus on the things that might kill us, so I think it goes against our nature a little, but it always helps me feel better.

I put on an audiobook or a YouTube video for insomnia (eg history for sleep) and just try not to think about much. It doesn’t always work but often the next thing I know is that I wake up the next morning.

I don't suffer from insomnia, thankfully, just have a very low sleep needs baby, but yes, nightime magnifies everything in the most negative way possible. I know this so I just try to do my best to remind myself that everything will look different in the morning. Easier said than done obviously

Thanks all. Distraction and gratitude is something I will try to make a habit for the nights where all seems so hopeless.

I can totally relate with what you are saying.
I have been a chronic insomniac my entire life and often dread going to bed ☹️
Everything feels worse at night and I find it very hard to switch my brain off.
Things are particularly bad at the moment as I’m 5 weeks post major surgery and still in a lot of pain in the wound.
I have tried every sleeping medicine on the market, both over the counter and prescription and even had acupuncture several years ago. (Didn’t make the slightest bit of difference)
No suggestions I’m afraid but my deep felt sympathy
