My snoring is ruining my marriage!

Help!

my snoring is ruining my marriage, over the last 4 months I’ve developed a loud snore.

My husband has bought ear plugs but he says it’s not enough!

It’s not affecting me, as in, I don’t know I’m doing it and it’s not making me tired during the day.

He claims I don’t stop breathing, and I don’t have any other typical symptoms of sleep apnea.

My weight has been steady, no drastic changes.

What can I do!? 😫
Im fed up of being scared to fall asleep and then falling out with my husband because of something I can’t control.

(yes, my intention is to see a GP but I can’t get in for 3 weeks)

I wouldn’t waste your time on the pillows. Dp tried a load of them and they didn’t work. If it is allergies, and you’re sleeping with duck feather pillows or duvets, I would try and change to hypoallergenic though.

You don’t always know you have sleep apnea so it might be worth testing for it. Dp (when he remembers grrr) wears a CPAP advice - without it his snoring could wake up the street (but I find the CPAP noisy in itself).

I wear ear plugs and an eye mask that wraps around my ears otherwise I get no sleep!

you can get devices to do a home check for sleep apnea now (they aren’t cheap but you can use the same ones the NHS send you)

That’s interesting to hear! Thanks for your help!

I have this problem, can I ask those who have suggested mouth guards which ones you use, as I've tried a cheap one and found it to uncomfortable.

I did try mouth tape on holiday recently and it did help, but again not that comfortable to use.

Mine was from a company called honex.

Go see an osteopath as you might have something misaligned and they can help

There was a discussion about snoring on the 'What's Up Docs' BBC podcast this week, it might be useful to hear the the experts' view of possible 'cures'. Sorry, I didn't take in all the detail so can't provide the info here.

I would sleep in a different room personally until you can sort it… it’s not a big deal.. you’re both asleep 🤷🏻‍♀️ better than seething resentment.

Mouthtape. I know you said you are nervous of it, but honestly, if its that bad don’t you need to give it a go?

its really fine - I use it as i snore because my jaw opens at night. It actually isnt restrictive, i can cough in it! You can also buy the time with a little hole in the centre.

i would only say don’t wear it if you’re full of but its genuinely changed the game for me!

An ex partner of mine had the worst snoring in the world, it was like a freight train was going through the house.
I firmly believe it is about finding the right ear plugs. I tried several that didn't do anything but then found some that block everything out. Has he tried a few different types? And at the risk of sounding patronising, you need to make sure they are inserted properly, make a huge difference

I use a mouth guard to stop me grinding my teeth, but I still snore! Is it a different sort of mouth guard that stops you snoring?

isthesolution · 07/05/2026 13:38

Just get your partner silicone ear plugs?
