Waking with morning dread and low mood

Just wondering if this was a peri menopause symptom?
Or if anyone else has this or had this feeling?
For the past month every morning I wake up and feel a sense of doom, like really awful depression.
After around 30 mins of being up I feel fine, this is every day.

@Changeusername1979 I am now menopausal. I did have this feeling. I went to the GP who thankfully prescribed HRT. Things improved, but still waking up with exactly what you describe, sense of doom.

I felt at that point I needed more tailor made care and paid for an online service. The GP I had the zoom meeting with, adjusted my prescription, sent my consultation report over to my GP, who prescribed according to the adjustment.

I now wake up and feel like my old self. I can’t express how much of a positive effect HRT
has had on me.

I have been putting of going to the doctors but I think I will book in.
Thank you for telling me your experience, makes me feel like im not going mad.

Yes I’ve definitely had this. I think it is a common symptom of peri menopause.

It’s only now seeing your post that I am thinking hmm I haven’t had that feeling for a bit.

Also racing heartbeat feeling. I think I’ve been tending to be more anxious & doomy than depressed & doomy.

DanceMumTaxi · 02/05/2026 21:55

Anxious and doomy is a good description. I also wake up shaky too.

Hellohelga · 02/05/2026 22:02

Yes I had exactly this. It increased until I felt like I was walking around under a cloud and could no longer remember a day when I felt happy and relaxed. I now take 10mg of citalopram and have done for years. It’s a tiny dose but it takes the edge off just enough for me. I get the feeling fleetingly every now and then but mostly I’m me again.

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 02/05/2026 22:27

Definitely get some blood tests done. I found when my B12 was low I would wake up feeling really anxious and low, then it would level out later. Could be something easily treatable like that?

Changeusername1979 · 02/05/2026 22:54

Ive just had bloods done for something else and all was within normal limits.
Although ferritin was right at the lower end (32) so will get some iron tablets just to stop it from becomg lower.

Its so horrible, just feel so depressed when I wake up, have this awful feeling in the pit of my stomach.
But after 30 mins I feel absolutely fine.

Yes, I think this started around my late forties and at the time I don’t tie it in with peri menopause, as I’ve struggled a bit with poor mental health on and off all my life. But the feeling you describe is exactly how I am - not so bad on work days as my alarm goes off and I have to get up, so no time for it to take hold. But on days off when I’m not rushing out of bed, it’s still an issue. I’m 58 now so have gone through menopause.

tipsyraven · 03/05/2026 20:25

I get this and in my late 60s. It’s awful but I’ve never spoken to my GP about it. Perhaps I should.

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 03/05/2026 20:29

Yes, it's perimenopause. It's absolutely horrible, only cured by HRT for me

RasberryJamAndScones · 03/05/2026 20:53

I used to have exactly this, it's horrible. I started taking 5htp and Magnesium before bed and it's made a big difference. Sleep better and feel less anxious when I wake up.
