Is this most likely scabies?

outdamnedspott · 02/05/2026 18:16

Adult DS was prescribed treatment for scabies on 10th March.

I then went to the pharmacy the same day and used the cream that day and one week after as instructed. Washed/bagged up clothing and bedding etc.

In the last week I’ve developed itching and spots mostly on my thighs/groin.

It’s going to be scabies, isn’t it?

I’m sure I had this as a child, which I thought meant I’d have had the rash long before now, but I don’t remember there being much fuss about it, or the test of the hose being treated, so maybe it wasn’t.

I’m panicking about being caught in this cycle for months. Not least because I’m meant to be going on holiday with two friends in seven weeks.

Is there any way to guarantee I get rid of this once and for all?

Thanks

OP you have my sympathy. They are fuckers! So after three prescribed creams, two doses of tablets. We bought derbac on Amazon and that got rid of them for our teen. This whole process was 5 months. So if you jump on with the derbac asap it should work. Good luck.

Thank you so much. So, I can bypass the doctor/pharmacy? If so, I will get on and buy that now.

Did you just treat DS with the Derbac, or everyone in the household?

@Thingcanonlygetbetter

I’ve ordered the Derbac last night. Had to get it from Lloyds as couldn’t find on Amazon.

Due to the holiday weekend, I don’t think it will arrive until Wednesday.

If I go to Tesco pharmacy today and am prescribed Permethrin again, can I use that now and then the Derbac in a few days?

Oh I don’t know if you could do both so close together. Ask the pharmacy. We all treated the first time with something the doc subscribed but none of the rest of the house got it. It went on and on for DD and Derbac finally shifted them. We never retreated the whole house again as DD was at uni. But tbh i nearly would just to get rid. . The impact on her mental health was shocking only coming back to herself now.

outdamnedspott · 03/05/2026 13:48

Thanks for replying.

The pharmacist has given permethrin for both of us and said to use the Derbac as the second treatment next week.

Glad to hear your DD is out the other side. Realised last night that DS still has/has new spots. At first he refused to be treated again as says the cream has wrecked his skin, and wants tablets, but I think I’ve talked him round.

My DS picked them up from a hostel in Prague last year it took months to clear. Like you we eventually used Derbac. DS is going to have to repeat a year at uni because the itching was so bad he couldn’t sleep and on top of a series of family crises his mental health took a hit. He was exhausted and suffered with acrophobia. He was unable to attend lectures because he didn’t want to infect other student and was embarrassed by the itching. He said he couldn’t imagine trying to sit through a lecture without being able to scratch his nether regions but felt it was inappropriate and unsociable.

I bought the Derbac in bulk so any sign of itching and we treat ourselves. I also do all my washing at 60 deg+ to avoid reinfection.

Derbac is much easier to apply and has a pleasant odour. The permethrin was a waste of time. I did a little research and scabies is endemic in some parts of Europe, particularly the Czech Republic, the source of DS’s infection. The mites are becoming resistant to the common insecticides.

I also have bought some benzyl benzoate to mix with a carrier oil as further backup. DS is now super obsessed with laundry and changes his bed weekly at uni. He also ensures all his underwear and socks are washed at a high temperature. I think ultimately what helped was leaving all his stuff at uni for a month over Xmas so the major part of the infestation died out. When he returned to uni in October last year we shut his room up for a month to do the same. The mites only service for a few days without humans.

I’m dreading this. I’ve just bagged up all my sofa cushions and about to start covering it in bin bags, and then on to washings. DS is clearly not seeing the urgency of any of this, seems to think I’m over reacting, and seems in denial that he still has it.

I feel like just doing the treatment then living in my car for the next three days.

DS caught it last year and it’s been a nightmare: took us a year to get rid altogether. Had to really pressure the GP in the end to prescribe two rounds of ivermectin for everyone in the house regardless of whether they had symptoms or not. Also sprayed the shit out of the house with Indorex which has permethrin in and sent the dog to kennels.

outdamnedspott · 03/05/2026 19:41

I’ve ordered Purple Turtle spray.

Why are doctors reluctant to prescribe Invermectin?

Do you think there’s any point asking mine for it and telling her I have a holiday booked, and not with family?

Ah OP your poor son. My DD worked so hard for the high grades needed and this shit show was diagnosed three days before going to uni. She is a clean freak to start with and this nearly pushed her over the edge. The stigma associated with it too. Derbac was the cure, a friends Dad was a doctor and recommended it. Wish we had known at the start.

Can I ask where the scabies presented for you all?

I only have it on my thighs and groin area. Nothing on my hands, etc.

I do have a spot on my face and can feel one on my head, which I thought wasn’t usual.

To top things off, I have a beautiful cold sore, and sore ear, which I’m hoping isn’t an infection.

It was arms, hands, legs but nothing on the face or in hair as that is unusual. You are doing everything right in relation to cleaning and bagging up cushions. Do you have a spare room that you could go to for three days. You do need your son to be on the same page to get this out of the house.

No, no spare room unfortunately.

DS Has stayed at numerous friends houses recently too. He did tell them last time, but I don’t know what anyone did about it.

Really worried that this is going to cause real trouble between us.

They move in mysterious ways. DD had slept in a double bed with a friend after a night out. She did tell her immediately after being diagnosed with it but she never treated and never got it. Maybe tell him about Crwysmam son and the fact he had to repeat a year at uni because of it. Honestly my DD was a wreck won’t have wished it on her worst enemy. She would never have slept at anyone’s house or sat on their bed when she had it. Also don’t forget to change shoes. So once you have treated don’t put shoes on that you have worn in the last three days.

DontKillSteve · 03/05/2026 23:14

Sympathies op. Wanted to tell you our story as it’s a bit less bleak. DD caught it at Uni. The Permethrin cream improved it but a few weeks later new rashes appeared. She used it again and the same thing happened. She then used Malathion (very fed up by this stage) which finally shifted it. No recurrence. None of her household caught it and neither did we (she was back home during bouts too). A lad at uni had hands apparently covered and was spreading it and refusing to get treatment. She had quite a mild rash, caught early. GPs weren’t allowed to prescribe Ivermectin- which was restricted to hospital specialists. I’m not sure if that’s now changed.

This is a really good “protocol” sheet to follow.

https://www.rivm.nl/sites/default/files/2023-01/75469_RIVM_014537_Stappenplan%20Schurft%20permetrine_EN_TG.pdf

the last time we did treatment I bagged 3 days worth of clothes, towels and bedding and kept them bagged for 7 days before treatment. Then kept to the rule of fresh clothes (including shoes/coats) that had been bagged or not worn for seven days until the next treatment and again same thing for 7 days after the second treatment. Also sprayed the inside of our cars with indorex. The whole washing and bagging situation was hideous. Also bagged duvets and pillows and bought extras. Spent a fortune on extra bedding and primark clothes to make sure we could avoid running out of “clean” items. Also sprayed things like office and gaming chairs, mouse mats. Bagged my laptop bag and avoided any handbags that weren’t leather, bagged DS’s backpacks.

These days no one shares towels ever and we all have separate laundry baskets so I wash by person rather than mixing.

oh and whilst doing treatment I wore disposable gloves when handling any dirty or clean laundry. god this brings back horrible memories!
