I thought I was having a heart attack last night - seems I may have gallstones though.

Second time I have had chronic high abdominal pain, moves under my right ribs and radiates through my back and shoulders. i can't move and only get relief laying tucked up on my tummy.

Have docs appointment at 5.30.

Bit scared.

You'd think, wouldn't you.

RedtartanLass · 20/06/2008 20:12

OMG!!!! First time on MN for about 1 year, and I find a thread about gallstones, which is why I have looged on again!! Oh god reminds me why I lov(ed) mn so much. RTL do NOT get sucked back in!!

Anyway, I have the most terrible, terrible attacks, been hospitalised a couple of times, cos I get the old jaundice milarky. Consultant is mad at me, as I really really don't want to have it removed. So it was good reading the posts to see that some of you have had the operation without having any problems.

Since today after having to stop in the middle of busy morning rush hour traffic to do some projectile vommiting into a skip, I've decided enough is enough. I am going to do a liver flush tomorow and if I that doesn't help, I'm going to book the operation

Sorry MehgaLegs for hi-jacking!
Did anyone try a flush before the op?

JackieNo · 20/06/2008 20:18

no - I just went straight for the op. It really was absolutely fine - fab, in fact, if any op can be said to be fab. I was in for 2 nights, then 2 weeks off work, no lifting etc, while it healed, but really no pain (they gave me painkillers to bring home, but I didn't need them) and at the end of the 2 weeks I was moving some paving slabs around so that I could paint the garage wall! The consultant said 'I'll just pretend you didn't tell me that' when I mentioned it to him.

JackieNo · 20/06/2008 20:19

(oh, and welcome back, Redtartanlass).

MehgaLegs · 20/06/2008 20:24

Hello RTL - it must have been fate that brought you back .

I have only had two attacks of severe pain. No other pain or symptoms. Ias this common early on though?

The pain came from out of the blue, completely bowled me over. I hate to think what would happen if it happened when out and about.

I did look into the flushes, redtartanlass, (welcome back btw, i don't believe we've "met"!) but I was too scared to do them

Swedes · 20/06/2008 21:19

I remember my mother having gallstones. I seem to remember she passed one - or am I imagining that?

BettySpaghetti · 20/06/2008 21:20

Flier -I'm not surprised you were scared to try a liver flush.

I've never heard of them so googled -eeewww...no thanks! Sounds awful.

MehgaLegs · 20/06/2008 21:22

Swedes - that might have been a kidney stone as I think gallstones are more to do with intestinal system. My Dad passed a kidney stone once - he yelped .

MehgaLegs · 20/06/2008 21:23

Betty I just googled this

MehgaLegs · 20/06/2008 21:26

Wow - I have entered a whole new world I never knew existed.

It looks like half a red pepper stuffed with puy lentils and oven-baked in garlic and rosemary.

BettySpaghetti · 20/06/2008 21:46

lol Swedes -i was thinking more long the lines of chickpeas!

Seriously though, can you have that many gallstones?

When I had the pain the doc thought it was a singular stone each time that was giving intense pain as it moved so I presumed you had one (or a couple at a push)

MehgaLegs · 26/06/2008 12:43

I have an appointment for an Abdominal Ultra sound on 10th July. I wonder what they'll find, hopefully not a baby .

My Aunt and Uncle have both had gallstones, my Uncle's got nasty and he was quite ill. They say my symptoms sound exactly like what they had.

Sorry sorry sorry, for posting then not have the courtesy to reply, but good grief RL does get in the way sometime eh? Thanks for the welcome back. I did the flush the day after I posted, and I have not had an attack since then!!! 2 weeks ago. So fingers crossed!

Bundle · 03/07/2008 10:18

i had an ultrasound meghalegs, after much searching they found a 1cm stone (just one!) but my gallbladder wasn't inflamed and my symptoms have receded so I'm leaving it put!

janx · 03/07/2008 19:01

I am wondering if I have gallstones - have had 2 blood tests that have showed an abnormality with my liver..am going for a scan in a couple of weeks - did any of you start of with abnormal blood tests? I also have high glucose levels - doctors told me not to look on the internet

cornsilk · 03/07/2008 19:05

What is the difference between pain from gallstones and indigestion? I have started to get pains right inbetween my ribs - it's weird, it reminds me of being really hungry except I know I'm not.

RedtartanLass · 03/07/2008 19:53

Cornsilk, I had a slight uncomfortable feeling like that, sometimes felt like a baby kicking. I'm guessing that was the begginning of my gallstone problem. However when you have an "attack" you would definately know the diffrence between indigestion and gallstones.

Imagine having labour contractions and then double the pain!!

RedtartanLass · 03/07/2008 19:55

Janx - no I didn't have blood tests, got rushed to hospital and stuck on morphine!! I've probably had them for years! Completley fit the 4F criteria!! Fat, fair, forty and female!!

Tas1 · 04/07/2008 12:20

I had my gallbladder removed.
The pain when I was passing the stones was unbearable. The pain sometimes lasted 2-3hrs and only stopped if my GP gave me an injection. Sometimes the gallbladder was so inflamed that it pushed against my lungs and I found it hard to breath.
I found if I ate peppers or tomatoes it set the pain off.
I kept my gallstones, I had lots of tiny ones that looked like tiny white cauliflowers but the lady in the hospital bed next to me had ones that looked like garden gravel.
