Vitamin D deficiency.

I had some blood tests earlier this year that showed I was very deficient in Vitamin D and so my GP prescribed me a 7 week course of high dose supplements (20’000iu capsules, one twice a week).

I have recently finished my course and so am now looking at taking supplements to maintain what is now hopefully a normal level in my system.

I joined a FB group about Vitamin D deficiency and supplementation regimes etc but to be honest the ones who shout the loudest seem like crazy conspiracy theorists and are dictating to people what volumes of supplements we should be taking and that all GPs and Pharmacists are “in it together” to not be honest with us about how much we should be taking as it serves a better purprose for them if we are all kept at deficient levels (crazy ramblings).

Some posters seem quite genuine and normal but the general tone is just a bit “off” and I’m a bit reluctant to take advice from those who seem to have their own biases.

So I am asking here if there are others who have had a history of vitamin deficiency and what supplements you take in order to keep your levels stable?

Thank you.

The vit D sprays are more easily absorbed and are easy to take.

Gosh I take whatever I find on offer. I also add Vit K - something to do with bone health.
I also try to get a bit of sun as I think that's the most efficient way of getting vit D. Although it's hard when you are pale like me and you are trying to avoid skin cancer. I usually do about 15min in sun.

I was Vit D deficient about 10yrs ago, also had high dose for short period. I asked to be re-tested but GP refused. We've just come out of winter so unless you were taking supplements already, its not uncommon to be deficient. Its recommended anyone living in the UK takes supplements in the winter as routine.

I was also anaemic 20yrs ago and again 10yrs ago when pregnant. I also had a higher, prescribed dose at the time.

DH and I cook from scratch most meals and eat a wide variety of foods, so i doubt I'd be deficient in anything now. I do take a multivitamin which has iron in it and in winter I add a Vit D tablet. Just supermarket ones. I know that other than the iron, majority of excess vitamins are urinated out (hence the bright yellow wee!) I believe you can leave store bought mushrooms in the sun which helps increase their Vit D level when you eat them. Vit D is essential to absorb calcium so ensure you get the recommended daily amount of that also.

You need to take 800 to 1000units a day life long. If you’re vitamin D deficient then you’ll always be. We don’t get enough sunlight in this country and very little vitamin D comes from diet.

I take 4000IU with k2 (all in one tablet) pretty much all year round
am not great at remembering so realistically I take it 3-5 times a week

I had a similar problem and after the high dose I have Nature’s plus D3 & K2 2520iu
