Oh Rhubs - how bloody scary. Scarlet fever is crap but easily treatable and thank heavens it is not meningitis.

How are you holding up?

Carmenere · 20/06/2008 10:58

Do not feel like an idiot fgs, you did the right thing, I'm very relieved for you

Rhubarb · 20/06/2008 10:59

I really did panic yes! He was poorly yesterday, vomiting, temp. Then this morning I took off his pj's and saw this all over rash - on the palms of his hands, on his cheeks, from top to toe! He had a high temp too. I thought it was strange and in the back of my mind the m word was there, but I thought, no don't be silly, phone NHS Direct and ask Mumsnet and there'll be a perfectly rational explanation for it. But the nurse said, "what would be quicker, for you to call an ambulance or for you to drive him to the hosp?" That's when I panicked.

don't feel like an idiot you did the right thing
better they see 500 children with suspected meningitis that isn't than miss one who has it
you did the right thing x 1000000
sorry your ds is ill - what did they tell you to expect

StealthPolarBear · 20/06/2008 11:00

NHS direct ime overreact with children because they're not there - they assume the worst
which is a GOOD thing

lou031205 · 20/06/2008 11:00

Well done Rhubarb for taking it so seriously. Glad it turned out not to be .

MrsRecycle · 20/06/2008 11:03

oh no rhubarb - sorry to hear about ds. I had sf when I was young and remember having to be kept in a darkened room away from my family for a couple of weeks. But that was sometime ago. Hope the antibiotics start working soon poor thing.

ilovemydog · 20/06/2008 11:03

Great news!

You definitely shouldn't feel like an idiot - and ALWAYS best to get rashes checked out with temperatures.

Had similar scare a few weeks ago with DS1 - admitted to observation ward where he was monitored. Scary rash they think was viral?

Glad your DS doesn't have meningitis!!!!

NatalieJaneIsPregnantAgain · 20/06/2008 11:04

Have been there to, NHS direct called the ambulance for him, all was well.

So glad he is OK, large bottle glass of wine for you tonight?

cheesesarnie · 20/06/2008 11:08

WingsofaAngel · 20/06/2008 11:11

Glad it isn't meningitis. I hope ds is soon feeling better.
Have a cup of tea and put your feet up for a bit.

Rhubarb · 20/06/2008 11:12

I still feel weepy

Threadwormm · 20/06/2008 11:12

Very glad he is ok. Don't feel an idiot for the panic! Absolutely right to rush him into hospital to be on the safe side.

Pinkjenny · 20/06/2008 11:12

I've done it twice! I was convinced dd had meningitis and would be the only case where the glass test was fine. It was a viral rash .

fullmoonfiend · 20/06/2008 11:13

Rhubs! That's wierd, my next-door neighbour's child has scarlet fever this week! And I've never known anyone with it before! Still nasty - she thought it was Meningitis too - she called me round to investigate the rash! Poor little dude been really unwell with it.

Thank feck it wasn't meningitis, ignore my CAT by the way, twas a 'just-in-case' source of support....

Rhubarb · 20/06/2008 11:22

fullmoonfiend - thank you, the fact that you're there offering support means a lot!

WingsofaAngel · 20/06/2008 11:26

You are still in shock and who wouldn't be.
I think things like this just bring everything to you and how much you love your children. Your mind goes into over drive and starts thinking of the what ifs.

fullmoonfiend · 20/06/2008 11:27

I still get a wee bit emotional just reading the M word! And it was 5 years ago...

OrmIrian · 20/06/2008 11:29

Thank goodness!

Scarlet fever isn't nice but so much better than what you feared.

Elibean · 20/06/2008 12:27

Phew! Thougn still not much fun for ds, or for you, and as for your work, I'm glad you said it or I'd say it for you

I was weepy on and off for a couple of days after dd was rushed into A&E with a pinprick rash and high temp (turned out to be a boring virus), its the thought of what could have happened, plus the adrenalin of it all, I think. Hugs to you, xx

Psychomum5 · 20/06/2008 12:45

thankgoodness that it is not meningitis, but for the scarlet fever.

DD3 has had that, and she was very poorly!

just to warn you, as they didn;t warn me......hands and feet can peel about two weeks after the infection. left DD3's hand really sensitive for months, and her hands also peeled every 6wks for 2yrs after, altho that was an extreme reaction, and she is 'bizarre' anyway according to her paed!!!

I do hope you all feel better soon and your adrenaline slows down.

EffiePerine · 20/06/2008 13:33

Scarlet fever sounds nasty but thank goodness it wasn;t meningitis. We had a scare too (turned out to be a viral rash), if there is ANY chance they get you in quick until they are sure it is something different. It is incredibly scary and I was v shaky for ages afterwards. Take care of yourself

Lio · 20/06/2008 13:36

Good god, absolutely NOT an idiot to have taken this very very seriously, so glad you had him checked out. Hope he starts to mend soon.

PrettyCandles · 20/06/2008 13:43

Oh what a fright for you! Thank goodness you were seen so quickly, and that it's 'only' scarlet fever.

I've known a couple of people who had this, they both started feeling much better once the abs started working, and recovered fully. As ever, the younger one was much less ill than the older one and recovered faster, even though they both started off very rough, like your LO.

Time for chocolate, I think?

TigerFeet · 20/06/2008 13:56

I don't blame you at all for panicking Rhubarb, i did the same myself when dd was about 18mo - rash (blanching though), temp of 40+ that wouldn't come down, floppy and listless - very scary indeed. It was a general bogstandard unindentified virus and she was kept in on a drip for 2 days as she had got a bit dehydrated. It was very, very scary and I was a wreck the whole time. Poor you.

There's been a case of Scarlet Fever at dd's nursery recently - is it making something of a comeback I wonder? I hadn't heard of anyone with it ever until about a year or so ago and suddenly there seems to be a spate of it.

Hope your ds feels better soon. Pour yourself a large glass of wine love, you deserve it.
