Thy3f and thyroiditis

Hi all,
I’m hoping for a bit of reassurance as I’m finding myself going down a bit of a rabbit hole.

I’ve recently had a thyroid pathology report which shows a follicular lesion (Thy3f) alongside acute inflammatory thyroiditis. I’m really struggling not to spiral and worry. Im
assuming if it was the really aggressive variety this would have been flagged on the US and biopsy?

The lump seemed to appear quite suddenly (was barely noticeable a few weeks ago) and now feels like it’s getting bigger quite quickly, but I know my situation is complicated by the thyroiditis, so I can’t tell if it’s actual growth or just inflammation/swelling fluctuating.

Has anyone had inflammation or thyroiditis mentioned on their pathology report? Does that tend to lean more towards things being benign, or could it explain why it feels like it’s changing/growing? I also experience pain when I cough which settles with ibuprofen.

I’m also finding myself overthinking every little niggle in my body and wondering if it’s all connected, which I know isn’t helping.

To add to the stress, the NHS lost my 2-week wait referral, so I’ve ended up going privately through insurance. I’m still in the NHS system but have effectively been put to the back of the queue, which hasn’t helped my anxiety.

I’ve had the biopsy results and I’m seeing a consultant (privately) for the first time on Thursday whilst the NHS effectively catch up. I’m hoping they’ll recommend surgery fairly quickly so I can get some certainty.

I suppose I’m just looking for:

  • Anyone who’s had something similar (especially Thy3f / follicular lesions)
  • Reassurance that this is usually a controllable / manageable situation
  • Experiences of thyroiditis alongside a nodule

Trying to stay rational but finding the uncertainty quite hard.
Thank you 🤍

Dear KK67, just a quick message to send sympathy through the ether. I'm behind you: had a biopsy of a nodule today and so my wait only just begins. And I agree the uncertainty is really hard and stopping the spiral of doom. I hope others will have more to tell you!

I had a nodule picked up at ultrasound, following acute thyroiditis. Severe neck swelling which went from under ear to collar bone, I also experienced pain on coughing at this time which settled when the swelling went down. I was told the nodule was not at the level they refer for biopsy (on the small side perhaps? They never explained the threshold..) unfortunately I waited to discuss with my Gp but the US results never came through, there is no record of the scan I had on my health record, it’s missing. I am thinking the nhs must have never filed it or sent it over, or it’s lost. This was 2 years ago now and I’m wondering whether to request a new US and get the nodule checked.

Wishing you all the best. The wait is so tough but try and keep yourself distracted x

I would have it checked. I’m sure it’s absolutely fine but what I’ve realised is that it most definitely is best to be safe.

Are you able to share more about the symptoms you suffered with thyroiditis and how long it lasted? I’m struggling to ascertain what is nodule and what is thyroiditis. I have a persistent cough because I feel I need to clear my throat, and it hurts when I cough. I have swelling and it all settles with ibuprofen.

I was absolutely fine until a bout of Covid in February, having been coughing ever since then this nodule appeared.
