My 2 year old dd's bits smell nasty - what do I do

dd is 2.3 and is being slowly potty trained. she spends most of the day out of her nappy and goes on the potty regularly. I noticed at the weekend that when she had a wee and I was wiping her, she smelt rather fishy.

The childminder mentioned it today too.

It's quite a pungent smell and she has flushed red cheeks (facial I mean).

Any idea?

just wash her regularly.

galaxy · 26/01/2005 21:45

I do! She has a bath every night and a strip wash in the morning...I was wondering if she might have an infection.

is she looking sore down there at all?

colditzmum · 26/01/2005 21:46

Er, I'd take her to see the nurse to chech she hasn't put any thing "up there". A friends sister did this at about that age...

galaxy · 26/01/2005 21:47

No - nothing looks different at all. She has had a UTI in the past and was really out of sorts last week with a cold and cough.

Hmm my Dd2 is often quite whiffy by the end of the day but doesn't seem to be in any pain or discomfort so i just make sure she has a good wash down there if she doesn't have a bath.

cat82 · 26/01/2005 21:47

Hmmmm, it sounds a bit like an infection. Rather like a thrushy thing. Has she got a temperature?
Maybe take her to the docs, if it's nothing at least your mind will be put at rest.

HTH

galaxy · 26/01/2005 21:48

omg - I hadn't thought of that but I can't imagine she would. she's a real fusspot about anything not being right with her or her clothes and gets upset if she has a bit of loose skin on her fingers or a rag nail.

could be the tail end of the cold, maybe a slight UTI which may be clearing by now. if your really worried then take her to the GP.

galaxy · 26/01/2005 21:49

I was thinking of taking her in the morning but wondered if anyone else's children smelled

my kids stink in general, does that count?

handlemecarefully · 26/01/2005 21:51

My gut feeling is that if she had an infection then she would be complaining of discomfort. My 2.6 year old's knickers whiff a bit by the end of the day, but I think that is the breakdown of urea etc in her urine (she probably gets the odd drop on the crotch of her knickers when she doesn't wipe properly)

galaxy · 26/01/2005 21:51

You should wash them more often

bath them most nights, but dd2 has apermantly snotty nose and stinks by lunchtime. she is a dirt magnet.

cat82 · 26/01/2005 21:52

Mine is only 8mnths old, and i've not noticed aything in particular yet, apart from the obvious dirty nappy smell that can be wiped clean with a wet wipe

WigWamBam · 27/01/2005 09:56

It wouldn't hurt to take her to the doctors and get her checked out. Fishy smells can indicate infections, and they don't always hurt to start off with.
