Partial denture advice

Hi All!

I’ve had to have my fifth upper right tooth removed due to cracking and it’s right at the edge of my smile line. I’m getting married in 2 months so my dentist has fit me in for a partial denture. I wanted to know if anyone has one and what it looks like and if I could possibly see pictures?

i know the world is on fire and there are bigger things to worry about but I can’t help crying at the thought of being toothless in my wedding pictures.

thank you xx

By partial denture do you mean a single tooth? In which case I’ll send a pic in a minute.

I had a temporary one recently. I didn't get along with it.
I'd ask if there are different types.

What about it made it difficult to get along with?

I had one but was replaced by implant. It was ok small and comfortable.

agatamum · 19/04/2026 18:30

Is this only a temporary denture with a view to fill the space with something more permanent eventually?

It was a 3 tooth one (2 molars on one side and one pre-molar on the other) and I didn't feel it sat quite right. It was a bit like having a toffee stuck to the roof of my mouth.

It looked a bit like:

It was while I was having implants. I didn't bother wearing it.

I'd recommend getting an implant but it takes about 6 months from start to finish.

Yes I would eventually get some sort of implant but I only had it taken out a week ago so no time before the wedding to do so

Was this on the nhs or private? That’s really helpful thank you!

Get the partial denture but ask what sorts they can do. Make sure it's comfortable.

I don't have a wide smile but it did show. I didn't smile much for a few months.Smile

Nobody will know except you. Promise.

I had one for about a year and no one noticed. It looked really good.

PJ98 · 19/04/2026 19:07

You have time for a dental bridge if that would work for the area?

I’ve been advised against them as they can ruin the other teeth next to them? I’m not sure how it all works!

They do. I had one but I wouldn't recommend it.
I'd get the partial denture and wear it for the wedding, then plan for an implant.
If you get on with the denture you'll be fine.

When you have a bridge you basically get the two neighbouring teeth crowned.
You could ask about a maryland bridge. Your dentist will advise.

I have a tiny little denture - a bit like this:

Mine is lower right towards the back. It was expensive (about £300 and that was pre-COVID so at least six years ago) but it’s honestly so good and was worth every penny.

Maryland is what I meant but unsure if the location would be appropriate. That has less damage to teeth than crowns. Only as this might be a more permanent temporary option but I'm not a dentist, so just throwing an idea out in case it was suitable to be discussed.

It’s really no drama. I chose one that is slightly too white in retrospect but otherwise it’s totally fine I’ll need more in future but this one is so easy to wear and unobtrusive I don’t really care. Serious gum disease here.

I have one of these, for 2 molars on one side. It is very comfortable, looks natural and easy to wear & look after. I plan for this to be my final gap solution ie: no plans for implant.

This looks great!

StationJack · 20/04/2026 12:05

@PJ98 (Maryland bridge) I don't think it would work either but it might be a solution to the denture on honeymoon potential problem. The dentist would be able to advise.

I had one but it didn't work for me but it worked temporarily.

@Lou2423 , Was this on the nhs or private? That’s really helpful thank you!
The partial denture was NHS. It was fairly recently and IIRC was £60.
I was also having private treatment at the time, so some of the costs/time might have been treated as private.
The denture was for between extraction and completing the implants.

I have lots of implants. I was hoping that I had scrap value but its the fitting nd technology that makes it expensive. Grin

Same, I don’t plan to get an implant either. Mine is a molar and pre-molar.
