Has anyone found anything that genuinely helps persistent bloating?

I am 56 and am constantly suffering from bloating. I was diagnosed last year with mild diverticulitis after being referred to the hospital because of change in bowel movements, bloating etc.

My stomach is huge by the end of the day, embarrassingly so. I can’t wear anything remotely close fitting anymore.

The latest thing I’m reading about is apple cider vinegar but I’m concerned as it says it keeps you regular and I really do not need any help in that direction 😁.

Has anyone successfully beaten the bloat?

Slippery Elm supplements also help

Deflectalittle678 · 20/04/2026 19:49

Reducing stress. Seriously. Look up effects of high cortisol. Hope you feel better soon op.

I have adenomyosis and I swear it is causing lots of bloating alongside eating too much fibre - are you post menopause? I swear menopause is making the bloating even worse

I cooked a v healthy lunch this Sunday full of vegetables and I’m still farting today and can barely do up my trousers

Booooooooom · 20/04/2026 20:42

So yeah sorry not many solutions from me but I’m glad you started the thread - I’ll be trying all of these 😂

HumphreyCobblers · 20/04/2026 20:47

I did a herbal protocol for eliminating hydrogen SIBO. I bought a gadget to blow into to find out what kind I had and then asked AI for a protocol using biofilm disrupters followed by anti bacterial herbs and digestive enzymes. It definitely helped a lot but didn’t eliminate the problem.

So annoying isn’t it, feels like we can’t have anything nice. Carbs make my stomach huge.. like I honestly can’t believe how much it can grow in size in one day 😂 even my thighs get bigger just from one day of carbs.

ladygindiva · 20/04/2026 20:51

Peppermint tea works well for me

Foodstore1 · 20/04/2026 20:55

Only intermittent bloating. I found kimchi and other foods full of probiotics helped.

Chocolateteabag · 20/04/2026 20:56

DH has found kefir, kimchi and homemade kombucha have really helped him
all fermented which you would think would make bloat worse - but it’s helping his (& my) gut biome

Vera87 · 20/04/2026 20:58

Colpermin peppermint capsules are amazing

I've always been sensitive to dairy and assumed lactose intolerance however my son has CMPA and so I have had to cut milk completely while breastfeeding and it has made a massive difference to bloating. I've had a couple of slip ups and can tell pretty quickly due to gas and bloating. I now wonder if I also have CMPA as I seem to get similar symptoms after eating beef, which apparently has a similar protein.

Candleabra · 20/04/2026 21:08

Do you eat lots of veg? I find that increases bloating. I think the trick is to find out your triggers. I find too many pulses bad too.

BloodandGlitter · 20/04/2026 21:17

Digestive Enzymes have fixed me in so many ways. I don't bloat any more at all when before it was after every meal. I just take one after my dinner.

PrincessofEuphrania · 21/04/2026 07:26

Lots of different things for me to try here. Thank you. I’m thinking of cutting out lactose, reduce wheat intake and take a prebiotic and see how I get on from there.

Chia seeds daily have helped me.

mantez · 21/04/2026 12:16

Have you any problem with ovaries?

Luckyingame · 21/04/2026 12:21

Absolutely cut out bread, onions, broccoli, cauliflower, beans, sprouts... The bread might not cause intolerance with most people, but apparently these vegetables require certain enzyme to be digested and are mostly a problem.
Otherwise, strong liquid laxative always works, but might not be preferred choice.

I have stopped eating grain-based carbs which is soooo sad but it works. I used to blow up like a painful balloon every single day, starting from lunch until at bedtime being like a walrus. Very gassy also.

Now I have a flat stomach all day and much better digestion.

HarryVanderspeigle · 21/04/2026 12:50

I've tried things together, so not sure exactly which one helps, or if it is a combination that led to success.

Chia seeds soaked in hot water to get the frog spawn consistency. Then add live yoghurt or kefir and something oat based for breakfast every day. Basically upping soluble fibre. i tried psyllium, but it made the yoghurt yoo slimy. I have bougt some capsules to try instead.

For probiotics, someone recommended water based ones are more likely to get where they need, so I drink symprove probiotic drink and tibeco water kefir. Anything pasteurised, like long life kombutcha won't have the live good bacteria. Also cutting down as far as possible on upf foods.

NorthernDancer · 21/04/2026 13:44

I cut out as much UPF as I could. Result!

grains and pulses makes me very bloated. I thrive on a diet of meat, chicken, fish, egg, vegetables (except broccoli, cauliflower, kale) fruit, berries, yogurt, sour cream. Endometriosis can make you bloated too

Lourdes12 · Yesterday 07:26

I was very bloated as a vegetarian so had start eating meat again much better

Appleseason · Yesterday 07:29

Taking digestive enzymes with every meal helps me.

Saw something on FB yesterday about this. Apparently its linked to increased Oestrogen levels or something.

Attenboroughsmistress · Yesterday 07:39

magnesium helps as well - deficiency causes digestive issues. But it’s honestly probably all the legumes! I can’t eat chickpeas or anything like that really without getting a sore gut.
