are my trainers big enough?

Not sure if this is the right thread but I have an issue with buying trainers and would appreciate help. I have always taken a size 4 in shoes but as I got older I started to need a 5. I have been trying to buy trainers (for general wear rather than a specific activity) but am finding that in one foot my big toe on one foot is pushing against the end of the shoe when I walk. The shoes seem plenty long enough when I stand upright.
Is this due to the way I lace them or do I simply need to buy a bigger size?
Sorry if this seems like a pathetic thread but I don’t know who else to ask and as we know, mums betters are all knowing!

When you try on trainers, once they are laced, there should be at least a thumb width between the end of your toe and the end of the trainer. that allows for movement as you run.

I wear a size 6 in shoes, I wear 7.5 in running shoes.

If one toe is at the end of the shoe you need to size up.

Some brands sizing is smaller that others so you might be between sizes. Its generally more comfortable to go a bit bigger (if the brand does half size this would be ideal)
As a general rule you need about a finger/thumbs width between your longest toe and the end of the shoe

Thank you, that’s really helpful, I had no idea. Presumably the same applies if you just want them for walking around in for comfort? You can probably tell I’m not sporty!

Thank you. Why didn’t I know this!!

yes I used to wear a 4 or 4.5 in shoes, sometimes 5 these days, and I buy 6 in trainers (for running, though). I don't know why they don't make trainers bigger to match, but it seems a very common thing that people go up 1 or 2 sizes in trainers (Asics in my case)

Do you have children? If you were a size 4, then it's entirely feasible that after pregnancy you are now more of a 5 in shoe size. Happened to me, it's to do with tendons/ligaments loosening and stretching. Also as mentioned above many trainers are cut fairly small, I am often a 5.5 in trainers.

Could also be the width of your foot pushing your feet forwards/out of position.

im a 3 wide fit. Im narrow shoes (or normal I should say, not fat trotter foot shoes 🤣) I would wear a 4, still uncomfortably.

Go and get measured!
