Restless Legs - desperate

dallysally · 10/04/2026 08:10

I’ve had the most terrible restless legs two nights running. Almost cramping and v uncomfortable, to the point where they kept me awake for hours.

I’m desperate for a good night’s sleep. Any ideas of anything that works? Have obviously googled but would love first hand experience.

Fairly fit, active and post menopausal woman.

Magnesium. It worth a go.

HangryBrickShark · 10/04/2026 08:18

I've noticed a huge difference with taking magnesium. But not the stuff you buy from poundland which does Jack.

Nutrition Geeks sell Magneium Glycinate 3-in-1 which unites three forms of magnesium (glycinate, malate and citrate). My partner has started taking it and his snoring has improved! My sleep quality has improved but also my concentration and my restless legs are gone. My restless legs were from sciatica from left sided sacro illiac pain.

A turmeric supplement really helps me.

dallysally · 10/04/2026 08:22

Thank you both. Have just ordered oil and will look up the 3 in 1

What’s your haemoglobin and ferritin levels like? Low iron can cause restless legs too

Dogpootwo · 10/04/2026 08:25

Came tp
say the same as others above- I was told magnesium would help and I think it does. I also take turmeric supplements- just recently started buying vitamins and gummies. I haven’t had the restless legs for a while so I think very worth a try

Moveyourbleedingarse · 10/04/2026 08:28

Magnesium glycinate. Take more than the bottle suggests.

You need 300-400mg of 'elemental magnesium'.

Dont get the three in one, it's the glycinate that works.

Moveyourbleedingarse · 10/04/2026 08:29

Oh and lie on your back with your legs up the wall too. That helps.
I take the magnesium about 3hrs before bed. My restless legs kick in about an hour before I naturally want to sleep so you need to be ahead of this happening. Don't wait until it starts when you are on the sofa in the evening.

Second vote for the nutrition geeks 3 in 1 magnesium, its pretty much stopped my restless legs.

KateK1974 · 10/04/2026 08:58

I have found tying socks around my feet just before the toes, has helped when the restless legs have been bad. I thought my friend was joking when she suggested it, but it seems to help!

Smartiepants79 · 10/04/2026 12:03

Weirdly the most effective magnesium I’ve found recently for me is magnesium glycinate from home bargains!

^ this. Get these checked. The ferritin is the most important one. It needs to be over 75 if it is.going to make a difference so even if it is in the nhs normal range, but below 75 you will still need supplements.
About 50% of people with rls will see an improvement with iron. If iron doesnt help there are other medications that will help you.
There are also meds that worsen rls such as many antidepressants, Antipsychotics, and sedating antihistamines such as piriton and promethazine so if you are taking any of these it might be worth discussing with your doctor.
Hope you get some relief from it, I know how miserable it can get.

Magnesium helped me.

Blueuggboots · 10/04/2026 19:52

The only thing that has sorted out my partner’s long term RLS is pregabalin. She tried magnesium, iron supplements etc and nothing worked.

Healthy metal magnesium glycinate is amazing!

Greenfingers37 · 10/04/2026 19:54

Magnesium glycinate from Nutrageeks helped me.

Starburst360 · 10/04/2026 19:55

Definitely try magnesium

dallysally · 10/04/2026 19:55

I’ve ordered the oil and oral magnesium. Arriving tomorrow 🤞🤞🤞

Hi, I recovered from years of restless legs by increasing my ferritin (iron levels). Mine started during pregnancy when I was borderline anaemia and I didn’t realise this continued for years afterwards. Now I supplement with iron it’s all but gone

AgnesMcDoo · 10/04/2026 20:05

Try drinking tonic water before bed

Faline · 10/04/2026 20:09

The socks trick helped me massively too. Sounds so strange but worked!

Sorry phone jumping about. I second magnesium and also Epsom bath salts.

NailsForChristmas · 10/04/2026 20:25

I also use the nutrition geeks 3 in 1. I have restless legs pretty much every night since I was 16. I'm now 43.
I live with it quite well after such a long time.

I have to get out of bed and do gentle stretches when it is at its worst.
5 minutes of stretching with gentle yoga breathing.

Making sure you are fully hydrated. If I haven't drunk enough it is much worse.

Sometimes I get husband to massage. Finishing with really fast chop style "hits" (not sure if it has a proper name) also helps. (Sides of hands over and over hit against legs).
