Risk of HSV from newborn kiss

Hi everyone,
Just hoping for some reassurance as I’m currently feeling very worried and like a terrible mum. A family member kissed my week-old baby on the cheek while visiting, and ever since, I’ve been gripped by the fear that they may have passed on the HSV virus to the baby. They did not seem to have any active cold sores, nor do I recall seeing them with cold sores in the past, but I know that the risk exists, even without a current sore. I just feel awful. It even occurred to me to mention it to them before they visited, but a combination of not wishing to offend them and assuming that people know not to kiss newborn babies held me back from saying anything and now I’ve endangered my child.
I know the symptoms to look out for, and needless to say I’ve learned from this and will be telling everyone who comes near the baby from now on not to kiss them, but I was hoping someone may be able to talk me out of this spiral of panic and worry. What are the chances that my baby will have been infected? Thank you so much!

Every visitor kissed my newborns ? All fine

you baby was kissed on the cheek so no infection can be passed on

please see a doctor asap about your mental health as you do not sound well

Hi. Take a deep breath. Honestly, it’s very unlikely they will of passed anything to your baby. Focus on that. People kissed my babies a couple of times when they shouldn’t have and they were all fine.

Of course, I wouldn’t encourage people to kiss babies and just say politely, please don’t kiss the baby in future if it’s possible they may do it again.

it’s really easy to get anxious when you’ve got a new born as it’s all consuming and little time to think clearly but I’m sure baby will be just fine. The amount of times I’ve worried myself silly over things and it turns out all fine.

Hope youre ok x

I suffer with cold sores terribly, have done all my life. I kissed my children all the time except when I had one. Mine are now 21 and 26 and neither have ever had one.

Thank you. I’m a FTM and just finding all the newborn emotions a bit overwhelming I guess. Thank you for being so reassuring x

I suffer from cold sores. When my child was a baby I had the biggest cold sore I’d ever had and never passed it on to my daughter. I don’t share towels and if I accidentally touch a cold sore I was my hands immediately.

Totally get it, I was the exact same. It might just be normal first time mum worries that all mums get but if you feel it’s more than that, you could chat to your gp (this isn’t me saying it is more than that, I just know from my experience, it was more than normal
worries and the help I got really made me cope better and enjoy being a mum) x
