2 weeks cycles - why?! :-(

I've had irregular, short cycles for quite a long time now (well over a year I think)- never really kept track of it properly but they seemed to be around 3 weeks long. I didn't really pay much attention to it TBH, other than cursing it.

Have now had the shortest cycle I've ever had - a normal period only 2 weeks after I'd started my last normal period. Complete with period pains!

I've got a doctor's appointment tonight because quite frankly, this is just taking the piss now

But what could be causing it? I'm 32, my weight is normal (BMI of 21), I don't exercise much, am not particularly stressed and as far as I can tell my thyroid is fine, too. I don't get hot flashes or anything like that, although I have had really sore 'premenstrual' breasts for a few weeks now.

Go to your GP and get him/her to do a swab (to check for infection) and also a bi-manual exam. Irregular cycles can often be caused by a hormone imbalance.

singyswife · 19/06/2008 20:33

How did you get on at the gp???? This could be caused by a crazy hormone imbalance, I hope they are testing your hormones.

singyswife · 19/06/2008 20:39

Are you here????

geekgirl · 20/06/2008 09:48

hello, I'm back

Well, I went to my GP and she didn't really do anything - she just said that menstrual cycles don't always behave how we want them to and do I want the combined pill, the mini pill or the Mirena coil? Neither really, as dh has had the snip!
She didn't even ask me how I felt generally or anything like that. She does want me to make an appointment for an internal exam though to rule out fibroids. Didn't say anything about blood tests.

Don't know what to make of this. I think I'd rather try evening primrose oil or whatever before taking the pill or having a coil put in.

Hi my sis has a friend who has no children but is on the coil as she has really bad periods ( I think she has PSO tho') it is a good idea, although from my experience of the coil (just came off it after 6 years) I had lots of in-between bleeding and irregular periods and pain during intercourse.
But that is me it might suit you different.

SubRosa · 20/06/2008 13:09

Sorry to hear your GP didn't do much. Please book the internal exam soon, as the doc may be able to feel fibroids, etc. PLease don't let the doc put you on the pill until you've been completely checked over.

I'm a bit paranoid about this sort of thing, as my GP dismissed my symptoms for 3 yrs and I ended up having major surgery. I don't want anyone else to have to go through that

lululemonrefuser · 20/06/2008 13:18

Push for better treatment. I am having exactly the same problem right now and have been sent for a full gamut of blood tests, had an internal and now going for an ultrasound. So far my GP doesn't know what's wrong, but she is trying to find out rather than fob me off!

FlutterbyButterfly · 20/06/2008 13:34

I had the same problem so I was booked in for a lycopscopy (sp) and the docs didn't find anything wrong with overies it was IBS.

geekgirl · 20/06/2008 14:25

feel quite defeated really as I've been putting off seeing the GP about this for at least a year, and then all I get is a bunch of leaflets about contraception that I don't technically need.
It doesn't feel right to be getting a full-on period only a week after the last full-on period has finished. Am somewhat of unwilling to consider it 'one of those things' at the moment.

Should I try to see another GP? The one I saw yesterday is off on holiday next week, which is technically the only time I can reasonably confidently predict that I won't be having my period, so I'd have a good excuse.

Yes, I would see someone else if I were you. Just explain that you have thought further on what your other GP said and that you are not happy to leave it be. I too have put off doing anything about it for a long time for all sorts of reasons but was so glad to see my sensible GP and it has made me realise how worried I am about this really.
