Please would you give me some advice, I've made myself frightened.

My 5 y/o DS1 seemed fine at school yesterday, then complained of a headache at bathrime and developed a fever of 102. I stripped him and gave him Calpol, but this morning he is on fire and says he feels "very poorly".

When should I call the doctor? I'm giving him Calpol but he really is burning up.

Also, I have a 4-month-old baby. How can I make sure I don't pass any virus/germs over to him?

I've got myself in a right state, imagining Meningitis, etc etc.

Update: it's tonsillitis. And apparently I wasn't giving nearly enough Nurofen or Calpol. I was giving 1 tsp, when it should have been 2, minimum. The lovely Matron at A&E filled up what looked like a horse syringe with Nurofen, and his temp is now on the way down.

I don't know anything about tonsillitis so am off to google the sh*t out of it.

Thanks to everyone who posted here, you will never know how helpful you've all been, every single one of you. Thanks. xxx

wonderwomanakaeandh, did you go to A&E in the end? At mine, they said there were loads and loads of viruses going about at the moment.

Hope you got it sorted -- check in here and let us know!

So glad it is nothing serious but tonislitis is nasty, I have said this before and i'll say it again - I'd rather give birth again then have the bought of tonsilitis I had last year
Lots of fluids, rest and cool sloppy foods are best.

The dr came here (apparently he was seeing the elderly man literally over the road)

dd was screaming with pain when I phoned surgery and the fact she had cold hands/feet worried nurse hence Dr appearing, within 5mins of him being here she stopped screaming about her head, he recommended same as you double dose of calpol or nurofen and headache was part of virus but also she was getting dehydrated so persuaded her to drink (although had to compromise by making lemonade ice cream floater) Dr persuaded her that she should eat soem dinner so managed a small amount of shepherd pie and veg followed by ice lolly for fluids.

Problem is shes spent alot of today asleep so is still awake now and I am shattered as hardly any sleep between the dd's the alst few nights and I have to go to work tomorrow (my Mum has them so she'll be fine if they are still poorly)

Apaprently this virus working its way round preschool so thats where shes got it from

Glad ds wasnt anything to serious, feel very sorry for him I had repeated tonsilitis as a child and ended up having them removed at 6yrs old

Wonderwoman and Beautiful, where are you??? I am asking because last night my dh complained of these symptoms and today I had to rush him to gp as he couldnt swallow and was dehydrating etc, he had Tonsillitis too. (last time he had it 2 years ago he ended up in hospital for 3 days poor man).

wonderwomanakaeandh · 19/06/2008 21:14

I'm in Kent - seems to be so much stuff going around (actually dd1 refused to let Dr look in her mouth so am now pondering whether it is tonsilitis)

wonderwomanakaeandh · 19/06/2008 21:15
