Just realised I get migraines

Any advice please?

I had no idea you could get silent ones and I now think I’ve had them for years.

The one this weekend was really bad though and I did have brain pain, it’s just that the body pain is worse.

I think it was brewing last week but I realised i probably didn’t help it by eating some things I now generally avoid as I’ve noticed I’m just better if I do.

it worse at it’s worse with the storm. I felt a bit fuggy yesterday. Slept well but feels like it’s coming back today.

I just put peppermint oil on my forehead - some memory that it helps?! And taken ibuprofen.

I have had migraines for at least twenty years. What I didn’t know until (very dramatically ) last week that it is possible to have migraine with virtually no pain!.

On Thursday I had a routine planned face to face appointment with a doctor at our go surgery. Back story being about 3 weeks ago I had an unusual headache which ended in a seizure. The seizure part is the least bit unusual as I have epilepsy but I hit my head badly on a newly timed floor and thought maybe I should report it to gp .

So 3 weeks passed that event the gp exams me , tells me to go straight to A&E with a letter and have a head scan. Holy shit gp obviously thought I was having an active stroke that minute. She asked me did I have headache? My response yes I give it a 1/10.

After a CT scan hospital doctor and stroke nurse tell me I have a hemiplegic migraine and suggest I get referred back to neurology to attend their headache clinic.

Now I’m waiting to hear further in the follow up

Sorry you asked for advice. In my experience Ibuprofen won’t touch a migraine. You need a triptan. Some weaker ones are available over the counter but I wouldn’t try them without doctor advice first.

As for me I am prescribed Maxelt Melts. They are incredibly strong wafer s that dissolve on your tongue. My only warning about those is if you take when your headache is not migraine you will feel worse. Usual side effect is kidneys go into overdrive you will be weeing for England and very tired but better than having a painful migraine.

pinkpostitnote · 07/04/2026 15:15

I suppose I’m confused as it surely should have stopped by now? It’s back today.

there’s a possibility it’s a period attempting to break through, I’m on tamoxifen. Haven’t had one since last May.

yep ibu does nothing

It’s no where near as bad today though. I’m toddling through. Luckily not at work anyway.

on Sunday afternoon I just had to lie in bed very out of it.

yesterday just felt a bit fuggy and hungover

Period related very possibly. I had the coil put in at 38. Totally stopped periods but cycle still keeps cycling in the background. Migraine would coincide with when my body would have been otherwise having a period.
kept that same coil in for 17 years insertion was so damn painful! Never had a bleed in all that time. I’m 60 and surely way past menopause still get regular migraines.

I also have migraines that go on for 3 days. Typically have migraine day 1 take my meds. Cured. Day two and it’s back again take meds. Day 3 tail end don’t take meds.

In the past I have been prescribed Topiramate for epilepsy with comment from neurologist this should also improve your migraines, but it didn’t.
Pretty sure I was also tried on beta blocker. Wasn’t keen on that as I don’t have any heart issues and gave that up very quickly.

Change of Nero after my last one sadly died. New guy advice cut out cheese, chocolate and caffeine. I literally can not function without at least 2 mugs of tea in the morning so that didn’t last long either. In fairness reducing caffeine did work I just couldn’t live without my tea and coffee fix, I have a stressful life. Caffeine props me up

Obviously, get in with your GP as you've had a worse one than normal, and to discuss options like tripans. For what its worth, a neurologist years ago recommended to me, at the very first sign of a migraine, to have an asprin, some full fat coke and some crisps or fries with salt. It doesn't get rid of the migraine, but it definitely lessens it, I do that at the first sign of trouble if I don't have any triptans to hand.

BeMintFatball · 07/04/2026 17:01

@Llalay I’m going to try your neurologist tip. It makes sense I always gave the kids salted crisps and lemonade after an upset stomach as they would not drink dyalite. And aspirin is a blood thinner

Thanks all, still not very with it this afternoon but I’ll return when I am. I’ve a few questions to be sure it’s a migraine before I see gp.

pharmacist said she’d give me something beginning with s if I’d had it before but couldn’t as I hadn’t so I had to take co codamol, which I’ll take later

For years I thought that I had a sinus problem even though my sinuses don’t get congested, because I get pain in the front of my face, around my eyes and over the bridge of my nose. Yet there is no infection. I now think that I have migraines. My mother had something similar and she, too, blamed her nose. It’s all very mysterious. I’m very interested in the information on this

Well, perhaps I don’t have migraines because I find that strong black coffee does ease pain. I understood this to be because it contracts inflamed blood vessels, but perhaps I’m wrong.

it can be a trigger for some people and a reliever in others.

Never heard of silent migraines. When a locum doctor came to the house when I was 15 he told me I was having a migraine. In 20s/teens I got them a lot, there was special medication available but I found it wasn’t that good. Only thing that helped was lying in a darkened room, sleep and paracetamol. When I hit 30 they vanished luckily. Rarely get one now. Mine were hormonal I think.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/04/2026 18:07

Oh and I had to change contraceptive pill at least twice as side effects were migraines and was told dangerous to take them then and needed a replacement.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/04/2026 18:09

I used to get auras as well.

pinkpostitnote · 07/04/2026 20:53

This has been a three day affair. I feel it lifting now but haven’t taken anything since midday.

i changed the type of tamoxifen (a type of oestrogen but protects against breast cancer and causes peri menopause symptoms) I’m taking on the same day I got this butI feel like it was brewing the couple of days before.

no period

I’ve definitely had similar with stress and also with a storm before. More whole body pain but similar brain shut down/ confused/ sensitive to lights and stimuli

had a lot of cravings esp crisps when it cleared a bit on Sunday

prob shouldn’t type tbh!

on tbe Sunday morning I felt fuggy so had a coffee and did some exercise - pain started in my back but I pushed through and briefly felt better. But then I totally crashed about an hour later

sorry this is muddled!

Aspirin sounds like a good idea, I think I’m supposed to take it for flights with tamoxifen
