Chronic athlete's foot when antifungal creams worsen neurological side effects

I've had a chronic case of athlete's foot i think in both feet now since last July 😳 and obviously it isn't going away. I am extremely sensitive to medication side effects and can't use antifungal cream like Daktarin or Canesten etc at all.

These all aggravate and exacerbate the symptoms of my neurological involuntary movement disorder called tardive dyskinesia that was caused by some prescribed off label antipsychotic that injured me permanently.

I've used Daktarin and Canesten in the past for thrush and a tiny pea-sized amount of antifungal cream gave me an acute dystonic reaction, and internal vibrations/-dystonic movements. It was horrendous.

Tea tree oil cream, mint shampoo, even Listerine on my feet aren't helping much at all now. They kind of keep the symptoms at bay to be milder, but gradually they come back.

To be honest, I know it's something only an actual prescribed antifungal cream will probably cure, but I am so over the stupid, unpredictable reactions I get from taking what most normal people could use without any adverse effects, I am scared to try it.

It is becoming really quite annoying either with the adverse reactions I could have or the general ongoing itchy and burning sensation I'm getting.

It seems I am doomed to have a wonderful chronic case of athlete's foot 😳😢

You need to see a podiatrist or a GP. Someone who can diagnose the issue/s and treat it properly, especially important as some first-line treatments contraindicated. See an expert

did you buy vicks yet to try it? the ownbrand one from tesco is £1 odds and worked for me.
just use a tiny bit to check no allergies and if ok go for it even on one area of the foot to look for improvements as a comparison with another area or other infected foot.

Doesn't look much like athletes foot to me either. I have it at the minute, the usual treatments did nothing.

I've been soaking my feet in white vinegar, washing them twice a day with proper soap, drying with a hair dryer. I rotate shoes and use talc in them after each wear & wash all my socks on a hot wash. I live by the sea so now the weather is better I can get some sun and salt water on them. It's prob 90% better but it is persistent.

I don't think that's athlete's foot op. That tends to be between toes where it's moist and fungus can thrive.

Have a chat with a pharmacist if you can't get in to see a GP urgently. But yeah, I think you need a proper diagnosis!

The thing is, I know that I definitely had athlete's foot last July as I remember having the cracked raw skin in between a few toes, and my skin in between my little toes was particularly itchy and burning.

It went away but I still get the itchy burning feeling and occasionally small blisters on the side of my right big toe.

Yes, I agree it needs a proper diagnosis 👍

I do all of the shoe rotation, washing with proper soap, drying with a hairdryer etc. Maybe it's been more dry skin (thanks, perimenopause!) that needs better moisturising perhaps...

It’s worth trying a pharmacy for advice.

I know of a couple of people who swear cutting out most sugar cured it too.

The photos you have posted don't look like athlete's foot. Are the sides of your feet itchy? Looks like dry skin to me. Does filing it improve the appearance?

They are quite itchy, yes. I've never filed my skin there, and to be honest I probably neglect my feet care when it comes to moisturiser etc so maybe I need to start being a bit more focused on them 😅

You may have dry skin and a touch of neuropathy.

gamerchick · 08/04/2026 12:48

Go to a chiropodist and get a proper diagnosis first I think. Then think about treatment.

Not convinced that is athletes foot tbh. Hard to tell what it is from the photos. If there are craters in your feet I’d wonder about pitted keratolysis as an alternate diagnosis. Maybe get someone professional to have a look?
sorry to hear about all your issues and side effects.

I agree that doesn’t look like athletes foot. Especially not a case that has been going unchecked for 9 months.

id go to a gp for a skin scraping to be analysed.

bombish · 08/04/2026 13:27

I had athletes foot on my toes. Tried otc fungal creams but no help. Went to see gp who prescribed Trimovate cream that has antifungal, antibacterial and steroid in it. Toes healed very fast.

not sure what was the problem but gp said that if the antifungal creams didn’t help it was something else. Probably contact dermatitis

Handeyethingyowl · 08/04/2026 23:38

I use Napiers peppermint foot cream which keeps mine at bay. It’s really good. Also Poderm anti-fungal serum for nails. Neither are a cure but I am very happy with how they are maintaining my feet. Plus you can use nail varnish over Poderm.

unsync · 08/04/2026 23:54

Margaret Dabbs Foot Hygiene Cream. It will sort out most foot issues including, but not limited to, Athletes' Foot. It's also a great moisturiser and will sort out fungal nails if applied liberally (although you have to wait for new growth).
