Its all just measurements of the eye shape or lense and the corrections needed. It means he is long sighted, I think? 50/50 chance

pootleflump · 18/06/2008 21:18

I think the fact that it's a negative reading means he's short sighted, but his reading is very close to zero so he's only very slightly short sighted.

ps. I'm no expert- just comparing his prescription to mine!

smartiejake · 18/06/2008 21:31

You are right pootleflump(great name BTW). Both my dds have + numbers on their prescriptions and they are both long sighted (which means they can see in the distance but harder close up) My prescription is -1.25 ish and I am slightly short sighted (only wear glasses for driving and tv.)

pootleflump · 18/06/2008 21:33

thanks sj!

the sph tells you if you are long or shortsighted. shortsighted in this case. It is indeed a very small number and virtually insignificant here. The cyl part is the main part of his prescription and this is for astigmatism. This is often described as the front of the eye being rugby ball shaped rather than football shaped. It has an impact on vision at short and long distance, when you're reading letters on a chart it causes distortion of the rounder letters so you may confuse O's, C's and G's for instance. Straight up and down letters like H's are often easier so you may miss letters on the top row and see them on the bottom row depending on their shape. In the real world apart from some blurred vision you might expect the prescription to cause some eye strain or headaches. It would be reasonable to wear glasses full time for the prescription you've mentioned but as a general rule you should wear them for things you need to concentrate on eg driving, reading, computers, TV

Yep, what heavy said (very well put btw - are you an optom?)

From a dispensing pov, you might want to think about a slightly thinner lens, although i wouldn't bother personally. Try and choose a smaller frame (he is quite slim in the face anyway IIRC so you won't want a massive frame otherwise it'll swamp him!) as the lenses with be thinner then. I think a chunky plastic frame would look quite cool, but i am very biased towards chunky frames, and i know they're not to everyone's taste!

(PS: I have my scan on Friday! eep!!)

misdee · 18/06/2008 21:45

oooh scan! let us know how far gone u actually are.

he didnt like the chunky frames, he has just gone for a standard, non fancy non statmenty frame.

he did effectivly 'fail' the dot tests, where they check for blind spots, he has typical eyesight of someone who has had a stroke lol. funny that really

Field of vision (checking for blind spots)test not related to prescription Misdee. Are they going to check that again or get a second opinion?

misdee · 18/06/2008 21:49

he is seen at the hospital for that

when they cheked it, afterwards they went through his history, and he said he has had several strokes (related to his time on the LVAD), they said his field of vision test showed his eyesight was typical of that. she is writing to the GP aboutit, but they already know.

All sorted then - he just needs to wear the specs now! Is it his first pair? - they might take a few days to get used to

misdee · 19/06/2008 19:29
