Help on verifocals

I'm wanting verifocal online, have all my details from opticians, I had ellisor variflux xr and they are crap , distortion at sides unbelievable. Think my local opticians were making it up to sell ,because there the best out there. I want verifocals that are clear and hardly any distortion! Wondering if anybody got any online .thankyou.

If you have an Asda near you go see the optician in there. I got full varifocal, no distortion full lense, thinned down, anti glare, scratch resistanr and designer frame for £80. The same specs in Vision Express with all the above was over £500.

It will be hard to put the measurements in from where your pupils sit, for the 3 different lenses if you get online

I wear Essilor XR and have no distortion. They are a really good lens, but buying online will likely be the issue; as they have to be measured and fitted properly. If these measurements aren’t spot on or the glasses aren’t fitted to the correct angle, then you will be looking through the distorted area of the lens.
If you try another Varifocal design online, then if your measurements aren’t right the vision still won’t be right.
Go to a physical optician and ask if they have a qualified dispensing optician to make and fit your glasses. It is more expensive, but there are cheaper high street ones such as Asda.
It is possible to have minimal distortion with varifocals. Online can be fine for some people, but it’s not always going to work especially as varifocal glasses need more measurements.

Yeah been to local opticians been measured etc got me prescription ,problem is with variflux xr vision crap ,like reading or watching telly example watching one person on telly ,the person at side would be blur. Want clear view throughout . Asda nr by booked a appointment. Looked on trustpilot mixed reviews but worth ago , dont want to pay silly prices.

Varifocals are really tricky to get the fit right. My advice is to avoid buying them online and to go to an optician and get them fitted professionally.

If they are even a few millimetres out they won't work for you.

Buying online is a false economy in this case.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 02/04/2026 07:31

Agree with @RampantIvy Optician all the way. I’m just going to get mine sorted later today! However I’m keeping all my other glasses!

jetlag92 · 02/04/2026 21:57

I'm an optometrist and i wear varilux XR.
All varifocals have blur at the sides - it's impossible to manufacture them without it. The more expensive the varifocal the less blur you get. You just need to move your head more - basically point your nose at the thing you want to be able to see. It takes a bit of getting used to - about a month in my case!
It's also very important that the lens is set correctly within the frame, it needs to be adjusted and then the measurements taken.
If you're not seeing well - go back to the opticians and tell them. They'll check to make sure it's been made correctly and if not change it.

Jetlag thankyou so much on you're reply, very helpful and understanding, I'm getting better everyday with the verifocal, even the distortion at side getting clearer. I'm new to glasses so its taking time to understand. I thought you put a pair of specs on and thats it! You have to work with them and now I understand that, my only gripe is driving like turning my head to turn over radio station its very blurry like I've had a few pints , thats moving my head also. But thankyou On post much appreciated.

I’ve just ordered my sunglasses as varifocals. The opticians suggested I try them before my standard lenses are changed. No tv watching but driving so do need good vision. £475 just for lenses. My DH says he has no side blur with his so mine are pretty much designed for my needs with the “ladder” of vision within the lens. I provided the frames. Hoping they are great!

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 03/04/2026 09:46

My DH has Rodenstock biometric lenses. He thinks the lenses were just under £500 and the lateral distortion is virtually eliminated.

7238SM · 03/04/2026 09:54

I'm not familiar with whatever ellisor variflux xr is?

Last year, I got my 1st pair of varifocals. I had quotes at specsavers and then at asda. For the same, plain frames, wide varifocal view, thinned and antiglare lens etc, asda was £300 cheaper!!! I chose 2nd pair, but could have got sunglasses instead. I only found they took a few days to get used to, but not everyone can cope with varifocals.

Sorry, its not an online recommendation, but if you can get to asda, I would. My closest is a 50min round trip, but worth it IMO.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 03/04/2026 09:56

Do Asda do decent frames though? I’m particular as they are part of “me”.

Ramblingaway · 03/04/2026 09:58

Also, don't sit bolt upright when they mark the measurements on the frame. If you don't normally sit like that, then all the measurements end up off. It was a tip given to me by a dispenser, she made me sit more naturally and it seems to have worked.

BadBones60 · 03/04/2026 10:28

When I got varifocals, really struggled and never managed to wear for more than an hour. After few weeks went back to optician and said couldn't cope, he tweaked them so lenses sat slightly differently and sent me outside for a walk. Difference was amazing and I never looked back, wearing constantly.

Soozikinzii · 03/04/2026 11:57

Another recommendation for Asda here . A bloke we go to who repairs glasses said he doesn't know how they produce the glasses they do at the price they charge and yes they have a good choice of frames.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 03/04/2026 13:41

Asda have a range of frames but my God are they boring! Try Jimmy Fairlie for something far more modern!

RosesAndHellebores · 03/04/2026 13:48

I go to a good independent optician. My prescription is 7.5 diopters shortsight and about 1.5/.75 for long sight, plus astigmatism. I've had five pairs in the last 15ish years. No idea about the make of lens and they are pricy - the ladt pair was about £900. However, they have been perfect from the point of fitting. I'm not persuaded that you can put a price on the expertise of the measurer/fitter. Once I went to Specsavers and paid about £650 - they were never right. Never again.

This really does illustrate why buying varifocals online is a bad idea.

Mine don't, they're great. My ones from Specsavers did and I got my money back and went to Boots which were fantastic.
