Results from ultrasound?

Hi

I had an vaginal ultrasound today, on a Saturday! GP requested it. I waited a week for the appointment. Anyway, went there today and the radiographer/sonographer(?) said she'll get the results to my GP by Monday and 'to ring them Monday to let them know you've had the scan and to check results'

Is this standard? Seems very very fast and got me a bit concerned!

I was scanned for irregular bleeding after sex and pelvic pain. Cervix on exam at GP was fine.

Thanks all

I had one recently to check on a missing coil (on a Sunday - they said they are running clinics every day) and the results were in my NHS app on the Tuesday, 48 hours later so maybe it's standard. Perhaps the reporting is quicker as it's online and no delay waiting for letters.

This is standard for my Trust. In the UK it is the Sonographer who writes the report and I'm sure , the majority like myself, will type up their report immediately after they have performed the scan so that it is fresh in their mind.
As reports are also all done electronically, as soon as the Sonographer 'finalises' their report, it is immediately sent to the requesting clinician, the GP in your case. In theory, the GP could look at the report this evening if they wanted.
I would therefore say it's pretty standard and try not to worry.

I've had results in in the afternoon with my patients being scanned in the morning. Makes it really easy to deal with abnormal results as you can get everything sorted really quickly and the normal ones can be phoned by reception to say all normal which was a reassuring.

As a GP it's so great to get the report quickly. I appreciate plain films and CTs and MRIs take a lot longer to report.

I had one last Sunday (to look for gallstones) and asked when the GP would get it and the sonographer said he was doing it now. Sure enough the GP had it next day and I could see it on the NHS app.

Hi there. I am having a vaginal ultrasound too soon. I was wondering if you found it painful at all? Never had it before so a bit worried. Thanks! x

It's similar to a smear, in that they insert a speculum-sized wand. Whether it hurts you or not is totally individual and down to any issues you have with penetration and existing discomfort.

Meredusoleil · 18/04/2026 15:02

I would say uncomfortable rather than painful. Just ask them not to insert and remove the probe too quickly!

sunnydisaster · 18/04/2026 17:51

Def not as painful as a smear, I’ve had a few (I had one after post-sex bleeding and I had a polyp and fibroid).

Thank you everyone, I feel better about it now. xx
