2 week cancer referral for 12 year old...mole

My 12 year old daughter has had a small freckle on the inside of her big toe for many years. Last week I noticed that it had grown in size, was bumpy, dark in colour with irregular edges. GP has said that he has referred her on the 2 week pathway to Dermatology due to concerns of skin cancer.
The skin cancer i believe in question is Acral Lentiginous Melanoma. Not the type caused by Sun damage. Pics included.
I'm beyond worried. I have requested blood tests too.

It sounds like the type of cancer a friend had when she was a teenager, also on her foot. I don't know what current treatment is but hers was removed with quite a large margin of clear flesh around it - I think she had a toe amputated.
She's in her seventies now and very active (we met through a local walking group) so it doesn't seem to have affected her fitness.
Fingers crossed for your daughter that it's not cancer but, if it is, you seem to have spotted it at an early stage and your GP is on the ball.

This looks similar to what a family member (adult female) had on her foot.

Yes, hers was cancer but it has been fully treated and she is now fine. Good luck and remember our NHS are very good at fixing things.

Our youngest had something that looked very similar on their forearm when they were about 7 or 8. Like yours had been there for ever but started growing. They were referred but no treatment needed and it fell off or disappeared, can’t recall now, it was a long time ago! I do remember it grew fast and was almost black in colour.

Had an appt with dermatology within 3 days. Consultant said it doesn't look right and has fast tracked plastic surgeon to take it out with a 3mm margin and test it.

Glad everyone has been so proactive with this. Wishing you both all the best.

Sending you good thoughts. I'm pleased to hear that everything's being dealt with so quickly. You'll feel better when this is behind you.

And good for you for noticing the change, OP!

I agree this looks suspicious. It's a good thing they are taking it off.
Please let us know what it comes back as.

This is a good reminder to ask teenagers about any changes in moles or freckles.

Wishing you the best of luck in getting this one removed/mind put at rest.

my daughter had a mole removed around 5. Thankfully it was nothing to worry about in the end, but I seem to remember doing lots of research at the time (nearly 10 years ago!) and it was recommended 1cm margins for anything suspicious that saves the patient going back if not enough is taken the first time. Might be worth pushing for that.

really hope it’s just a compound mole. Thinking of you both.
