Denture partial replacement

I have to choose a denture for front 3 teeth. Are the chrome ones which hook onto my good teeth better than the acrylic one I have now with a plate that gets secure with fixadent. My gums shrunk and now I can replace with the same acrylic or pay more for chrome one with hooks. Please help me choose.

I'll probably need to get one for one tooth

Have you looked at something called a flipper? It apparently attaches to the gum. It may not be an option if it's for more than one.

I've been told that mine is temporary before they put a bridge or whatever on it. But I think there's no reason you can't use it permanently. It doesn't require a fix sealing thing.

when I went onto YouTube to investigate, I saw lots of comments from people saying that nobody told them it was an option.

I lost 5 of my top teeth when I was 21. Like you, I had an acrylic plate initially while the gums settled down, but within a year a wonderful female dentist near the university I was at saw how much the acrylic denture was bothering me and knocking my confidence and insisted I had a chrome one instead. I still think of her as a fairy godmother at that point in my life! I had a chrome plate for almost 30 years that occasionally had to be added to or re-made to compensate for further upper teeth that I lost.

Then a few years ago disaster struck in the form of an inept trainee NHS dentist. She removed another tooth and ballsed up the adaptation that had to be made to my chrome plate, and to cut a long story short, I ended up with an acrylic denture. There's no going back for me at this stage in my life, sadly, and I've had to try and adapt to the new arrangement, but I cannot tell you how much I wish I could still have a chrome one. I won't go into detail but it has really affected how I live and I know I'll never be anywhere near as comfortable with it as I was with my chrome plate. Yes, there may be a little bit of clip visible depending on the location of your missing teeth, but believe me it's a very minor price to pay for the comfort and general look and feel of a chrome vs. acrylic.

I hope you do go for the chrome option OP and I wish you many many years of confidence and comfort with it.

Thank you so much for your reply. I am so undesisive as I have a small 3 tooth acrylic denture which to be honest have got used to but gum has shrunk and time for a new one now. Chrome plate as you advise is best so I will take your advise and kind words and go for it. Thank you again for your time.

Just one more question. Can you still use flexident to give a more secure hold ? I'm nor sure that the chrome clip on plate will be as secure and my acrylic one now. X

I've no answers for your questions, but as I'm weeks away from getting an acrylic denture for a bottom front tooth, never having a denture before, does it take a while to get used to how it feels in your mouth?

In all my years of wearing a chrome plate - and I began with 5 missing - I never needed to use fixative. I'm not sure what the dynamics of it are but it worked! 😃 On the other hand, if it reassures you to use fixative it's possible to use some, but you would need very little compared with an acrylic and it would be a bit trial and error to begin with while you get used to applying the right amount and in the right spots so that it doesn't spread beyond the chrome. But you would figure that out very quickly.

In my experience, fixative is pretty much non-negotiable with an acrylic, especially as time goes on.

Hope that's useful!

I have only got partial denture at top front so not sure what bottom tooth would be like but it's only one tooth so think it will be fine. If you look on tiktok there are soooo many videos and people posting on there which might help. Good luck.
