I applied Oct 22. Six months. It was backdated.

renewals are longer apparently

PersephoneSmith · 22/03/2026 15:50

It doesn’t matter how long it takes. Any award is backdated.

Except reviews where the claimant triggered it by reporting a change of circumstances- those usually aren't. I currently support clients with approx 4-7 new claims and reviews a month. New claims are fairly quick- reviews are taking a very long time due to the ongoing backlog. OP, Send as much supporting evidence as you can with your claim, and take a look at the citizens advice website for more information, or the benefits and work website.

I was a PIP Case Manager for six years. Change of circs absolutely should be backdated if it’s an increased award, so long as the qualifying period was met the day the change of circumstances was logged.

If it isn’t backdated then this is likely an error when they’ve keyed in the effective date and I’d be seeking to challenge it. It’s not your clients fault that there are big backlogs.

No you're quite right- I've had to do countless MRs however in the past 12 months or so on this very basis. We have raised it frequently as an issue that seems to be happening a lot.

It does if you're now unable to work/had to cut down hours and have lost income.

BillieWiper · 22/03/2026 16:42

I've no recent experience of brand new claims but think the ones I knew of took about three months from first application to award. But this was about 10 years ago.

Some who are already on it but are being reviewed seem to get stuck in the system for ages. I know one who did the forms and heard nothing back for three years, they just kept extending it.

But yeah will be backdated to when you sent forms.

Hope you get what you're hoping for x

But PIP isn't an income replacement benefit, that's ESA or UC health.

Which will have their own wait times, it doesn't really matter where the money comes from if you're struggling to survive.

Sorry if I wasn’t clear what I meant. The OP needs to get her claim in ASAP. Because any award will be backdated to the day she claimed. So don’t wait a week or a fortnight or a month because ‘it takes ages anyway’

I just meant if it's because OP hasn't got an income at the moment she could apply for ESA or UC too and that might come through more quickly.

324Mumoftwo · 23/03/2026 22:38

I have sent off my pip
application today. Hopefully the wait isnt too
long
