Hi my dd has started to smell under her arms. I noticed it really strongly about 2 weeks ago. Not sure if i've smelt her before and not taken any notice as i thought it was me. 2wks ago She was on my lap and i had my chin on her shoulder and thought omg i stink, right im off to bath( it had been a hot day lol). For some reason i smelt under my arms - it was'nt me.........Without thinking i lifted her arm and it was her.....
I used to bath her in the morning and if its been a messy or hot day then in the evening also, but now its every morning and night.
Oh she's 3 1/2.
Its not always as strong as that day but just thought surly she can need to be using roll-on/spray etc yet - should she?????

NO !!!!!!!!

The underarm smell is due to bacteria feeding off the sweat. she shouldn't be melling at this age though. Have you taken her to see the GP?

avenanap · 17/06/2008 22:30

Smelling not melling. Doh!

Furball · 17/06/2008 22:32

I didn't think deodorant needed until puberty? Maybe worth popping along to the docs to ask advice.

oldcrock · 17/06/2008 22:35

My dd has just started to use it age 9, which seemed young to me! 3.5 seems very young - I would check out with a medical person next time you are there.

TinkerbellesMum · 17/06/2008 22:50

I'd see the GP as it's not normal at her age. My niece is having similar problems (although a little older) she is also growing pubic hair, her mum is too scared to take her to the GP (Mum is going to do it now I think).

Brainache · 18/06/2008 00:51

Yeah i did think 3.5 was young but was not sure when, cant remember when i started, so long ago haha
No not been to the GP - I came here 1st
I have to go to the drs soon so i'll get a double appointment. Gonna keep a check on it more for the next few days at least. Thinking of it i smelt her top sat evening when she took it off to bath - it had a b o smell around the armpit area - it was a cap sleve top and we had been in the garden running around.....Should she not be smelling after that? Sorry i have no idea she's my 1st

Sweat changes in puberty, before it doesn't smell, after it does. I can't remember what the change is that makes it smell.

RosaLuxembunting · 18/06/2008 10:24

DD1 has just started using it and she is 10. She gets quite sweaty after PE now. DD2 will probably need it soon - she has always been sweatier than DD1 and has quite smelly feet.

Brainache · 18/06/2008 13:37

She smelt again this morning
Will call the Drs tomorrow am and see if i can get an appointment
Surely shes not starting puberty now !!! lol God could you imagine - Explaining to a 3.5 about Periods then theres PMS, Hair, Tantrums ..... lol

I started using it at 9.
Ds occasionally has a sweaty underarm smell - he's 9, but doesn't use deo yet. 3 and a half is very young...

Zippidy · 18/06/2008 13:45

My ds (9) was desperate to use deodarant - all his friends do and he insisted he smelled of BO (I sniffed his armpits and he didn't at all!). Finally gave in and bought some and after 2 days he had terrible inflamed skin underarms - now he just sprays it on his school top so his friends think he uses it!!

At 3 think it wouldn't be good for her skin at all - hope that your visit to GP sorts this out for you

Meid · 18/06/2008 13:52

My DD, who is 7, has had BO for 3 years - no signs of puberty yet.

We use deodorant on her very occassionally when we know she'll be running around more than usual, eg when she's off to a party or its sports day at school.

On a day to day basis the smell is not too noticeable (unless you go in close for a sniff!) - she complains more about the uncomfortable feeling of being wet on her underarms.

I never thought to take her to the GP, just its the way she is.

TinkerbellesMum · 18/06/2008 14:22

Brainache it's called precocious puberty (not that I'm saying it is happening to your daughter) and it can happen to babies. Apparently it's becoming more common these days. It's worse than your example, the youngest mother on record was 3. They do become more sexualised and have to be protected because of it, but obviously some men take advantage of that.

pavlovthecat · 18/06/2008 14:23

Never. Not needed.

smartiejake · 18/06/2008 14:27

Both my dds have used deoderant since about the age of 7. They are now 10 and 12. Both seem to be developing normally and only the 12 year old is showing signs of puberty (which is expected at her age).

3.5 does seem rather young though...
