problems with Clotrimazole

clotrimazole cream is making me very drowsy. I can cope, but I’m scared to start using a pessary, as I imagine it will contain more active ingredient, and more will be absorbed into the system, even though it will only be a small amount.
im not sure anyone will know the answer, but I don’t know where to ask, other than the chemist, and then the doctor. I don’t know what an alternative medication could be..
I have a brain/neurological injury, since then sometimes I react to medication differently. for example, I can no longer take metronidazole antibiotic, it says so on the packet use with caution in those who have brain or neuro injury. I reacted to metronidazole terribly since brain injury .
the brain/neuro injury will be the problem re. Clotrimazole, I suspect
Sorry long post, and tmi.

What is your question?

EBearhug · 17/03/2026 00:24

Why are you using it? For thrush? You could try plain yoghurt as a topical treatment.

There are other antifungals available, but you will need to speak to a doctor and/or pharmacist to check for contraindications.

Yes it’s for thrush .
thanks I will ask about an alternative medication in pessary form that is specific to thrush, and / or I will ask if the cream can be used internally . and will look in BNF
I think the cream might be used in another country. yes they’re questions for a pharmacist or doctor. Clotrimazole isn’t contra indicated with neuro or brain injury.

I think the cream is used internally outside of the uk. that could be tricky to apply. and I wonder if pessaries are stronger and more effective .. pharmacist/doctor questions

Hi OP 👋
Just to say solidarity and hugs. I have a neurological condition called tardive dyskinesia that was caused by some prescribed off label antipsychotic for severe anxiety and insomnia after a head injury, and i react similarly to various medications now.

I also need to be (over) cautious about using medications as they can exacerbate my movement disorder symptoms, and i sometimes get adverse reactions that i might not have done before my concussion and iatrogenic injury.

Sending hugs, I understand. No other advice I'm afraid 😞

Plus I've had an awful adverse reaction to the antifungal cream Canesten and also Daktarin once, which really did exacerbate my movement disorder symptoms and gave me internal vibrations and an acute dystonic reaction.

Antifungal creams are endocrine system disruptors so do affect brain chemistry and dopamine (as oestrogen can impact dopamine).
