UTI Hell

Lara96 · 16/03/2026 19:04

Has anyone had a UTI where they are bursting to go but pee little amounts and then immediately the bursting to go feeling is back. I went to the pharmacy and they gave me a 3 day course of Trimethoprin.

This pressure is horrific I could cry. I also have Diabetes so don’t know if the UTI is from that.

Yes - that's how I get them. And it hurts like hell every time you do pee.
Drink lots of water, it does help.

Fashionlover123 · 16/03/2026 19:13

Yes it’s awful!
sit in a warm bath and drink lots of water
order some D-mannose on Amazon prime and take the maximum dose tomorrow!

Stickytoffeetartt · 16/03/2026 19:16

It's awful, hopefully the tablets will kick in soon
For weeks i thought i had cystitis and wondered why it wasn't clearing up. It was horrific.
I eventually went to the doctor and got antibiotics.

Iloveeverycat · 16/03/2026 19:26

How old are you. When I had this it was virginal astrophy due to hormones lowering due to menopause.

CharlotteCChapel · 16/03/2026 19:28

Make sure you get to see a doctor. Last year mine developed into a kidney infection. Three weeks ago another kidney ( not UTI ) infection tried to get me 6 feet under but dialysis is keeping it manageable

I was going to say the same- I came off HRT and a few months later had 3 UTIs in a row. I'd never had one before. After tests I was prescribed vaginal oestrogen and I haven't had another UTI after 2 years.

damelza · 16/03/2026 19:37

On personal experience I don't think 3 days antibiotic treatment is long enough. I had one recently after a long time without, and doc immediately gave me 7 days course. Sorted it thankfully.

I had recently had endo surgery via hysteroscopy and had a catheter. Those bloody catheters are germ factories for down there, no doubt about it. And I was on prophylactic a/bs after the surgerty too, and still got a bloody UTI two weeks later. I dunno.

Lara96 · 16/03/2026 19:42

I am 47 and I always wonder if I have Vaginal Atrophy as my inner labia disappeared when I was late twenties/early thirties.

I still have my regular periods so I don’t know i am at peri menopause.

I just did a dipstick test and it isn’t showing anything not even glucose and I am diabetic with levels above 9mmol.

I have been drinking a lot today so the sample was clear coloured so would that affect the result.

Drink cranberry juice

Pettifogg · 16/03/2026 20:22

Get some cystitis relief sachets from the supermarket or the pharmacy. Drink those while waiting for the Trimethoprin to take effect.

Poor you. I took agree that 3 days is not enough. Last year this happened to me - went to pharmacy, got 3 days course of something, two days after that finished, the infection was back. Went to pharmacy again, they said couldn't treat twice and told me to see doctor. My doctor works with online forms, so did one of those that night. Got a call next morning, they said they would like a urine sample, but in the meantime they'd give me another 3 day course. Managed to collect that that night after work, and managed to visit doctor's surgery in my lunch break the next day to do the sample. Meanwhile, I'm developing quite bad backache. Sample is finally tested, showing infection. Two days later I'm in a lot of pain and realise it could be my kidneys. Put in another online form. They call the next day and I get another prescription for a 7 day course of something.

The reason it all got so bad was because the initial 3 day course is just not enough to knock things on the head. Then it has time to develop into something far more serious.

fiorentina · 16/03/2026 20:37

Personally trimethoprim doesn’t work for
me. Nitrofurantoin works better for me and the pharmacy gave me a 3 day course of that. I previously had endless UTIS and it was miserable, taking ibuprofen and paracetamol together for the pain helped a little.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 16/03/2026 20:39

Yes, I’m on antibiotics just getting over a hellish one. Awful going for a wee and still needing the loo feeling like you need the loo constantly

Thindog · 16/03/2026 20:49

It's horrendous, but the antibiotics do usually kick in quickly and by tomorrow you should be much better, so don't despair. Drink lots and avoid scented bath products.
You might need some oestrogen cream if you get repeat episodes.

TofuTuesday · 16/03/2026 20:51

47? I would be exploring Genito urinary symptoms of menopause and asking for local oestrogen.

Spaghettion · 16/03/2026 20:54

Did the pharmacist test a urine sample, I had a UTI when I was abroad last year and was prescribed Trimethoprin and it didn’t work. It was
only when I gave a urine sample back home I was prescribed a different antibiotic, Nitrofurantoin that worked within hours.
I had an horrific UTI a couple of years ago that was so unbearable I went to A&E, I was given intravenous antibiotics that cleared it pretty quickly.

Spaghettion · 16/03/2026 21:00

For those of you getting repeated UTIs I read an
article recently where the tv presenter Cherry Healy explained how she had recurring infections that weren’t showing in urine samples because the infections were embedded in her bladder.

Thegrassroots26 · 16/03/2026 21:05

Is there any possibility it could be a sti? Sometimes they present with urinary issues like pain, frequency etc

When you had your infection were you using cystitis sachets at the same time as antibiotics? (Like you just recommended to Op). If so that could be why the first lot of antibiotics weren’t enough

Yes I probably was on the first day. Is that wrong then? If so, OP, ignore me!

I was advised not to take at the same time because I thought it would help with the symptoms until the antibiotics kicked in but was told not to because it can stop the antibiotics working effectively. Which could’ve a reason you needed more antibiotics

The deletion was probably because I mentioned a brand name. But try D mannose supplement to help avoid recurrence.
