Swollen eyelid with blepharitis and pus spots before trip, advice?

I have blepharitis on one of my eyelids. It’s swollen and there are visible pus spots (small) so it looks like it’s infected. Painful to touch and underneath my eye is swollen too. I had this last year (other eye) and went to see the pharmacist who wouldn’t give me anything. Told my to bathe it in warm water and it would go away. It did go down but my eyelid never went back to normal.

Now I have it in my other eye and I look like Ive been in the boxing ring! It’s my birthday next week and I’m off work and have a nice 5 day trip booked. What can I do???

I got Theoloz duo drops, hycosan night ointment and optase tea tree wash all on Amazon when I had blepharitis. Sorted it within days

See of there is an emergency eye clinic tomorrow morning at your local Hospital. You can ring them directly. They’ll usually ask you to email over photos.

You might need to be insistent, the person who answers at OIt’s seems to think it’s their job to stop anyone being seen but infected Blepharitis does need checking out. If you go anywhere else they simply won’t have enough experience to deal with it properly.

If you don’t have an Emergency Eye Clinic running in the morning you need to see your Optician first thing on Monday.

I didn't know that's what it's called. I had an 'eyelid infection' a few months ago. The doctor prescribed me antibiotic eye cream. The pharmacist's assistant looked at the prescription a bit funny and asked why I wasn't getting eye drops - but it turns out you need the cream for eyelid infections.

Make a GP appointment.

Try The Eye Doctor Mask. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07KSJCY1R/ref=sspa_mw_detail_0?ie=UTF8&psc=1&spc=MTo1ODQzOTk5OTAxMjgxMDE3OjE3NzM1MTkzNDI6c3BfcGhvbmVfZGV0YWlsOjMwMDk2OTgwNzg5MjgzMjo6Ojo&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9waG9uZV9kZXRhaWw&aref=tnT9UyHB16&sp_cr=ZAZ

Pop in microwave to hear. Wear for ten minutes then massage eyelids. Clean eyes with a solution like blephasol also available from amazon. It does work a treat on my eyes.

I forgot I got this too
The warmth really helped

I’ve ordered these and they should arrive today. Really hope this clears up soon.

For future prevention, if you’re prone to this, try Blephaclean eyelid wipes. An eye consultant recommended them for my kids who all had this problem. Her view was that we’re all a bit too gentle with our eyelids (!) and they need a better scrub with a hot flannel and then a good clean with the eyelid wipes, to remove oil and other debris that block the eyelash pores.

Yes, Ive had it in both eyelids now (in the last 12 months). I think I’ll have to be a bit more thorough with my eyelid cleaning. Ive read that taking flaxseed oil capsules helps too so may get some of those.

How is your eye this morning @SweetPeaandJasmine? Smile

hellsbells99 · 16/03/2026 07:22

As well as all the self help treatments that previous posters have referred to, I needed prescribed steroid/antibiotic cream. I was referred to an eye clinic and was given maxitrol ointment which was really effective.

I would definitely agree with this as a prevention after this episode goes away.

For this infection though, you need to be putting a hot flannel on the eyes twice a day (re-warm it if it gets cold) and massage. It will also clear up faster if you use an anti-biotic ointment - your optometrist can prescribe if you can't get a doctors appointment.

I have blepharitis. I also use the Eye Doctor mask regularly, and use Eye Doctor liquid to clean my eyes every day. It is cheaper than Blephasol and does the same job. Boots/Superdrug often have offers on both of them though, and you can also get Eye Doctor on Amazon for a good price.

I also use eye mist spray to keep my eyes moist which helps a lot

SweetPeaandJasmine · 16/03/2026 18:40

It’s starting to go, thankfully. Eyelid not as swollen. I got one of those eye masks and some Blephasol. I used baby shampoo before it arrived. Seems to be doing the trick but I think I’ll definitely have to give them a good clean every day from now on!
