What could cause this pain in the bum/groin/upper thigh area?

I have pain roughly in the red area, what could be causing this? It's really painful when sitting, less painful when moving around but still aches. Its on the left side and I only really get relief if I'm lay on my right side in bed. I can't see anything obvious but given the location it's hard to see properly.

Apologies for the ridiculously silly censoring on the diagram, never know what will be acceptable on mn!

It sounds like an inflamed sacroiliac joint in your pelvis. No cure but you can have a steroid injection.

Prirformus syndrome look up on you tube for stretches can really help. Plus pilates to strengthen core muscles to reduce impact on that area. Plus sport’s theory massage can ease the joint.

And I’ve had acupuncture from GP pain specialist which helped

Mossstitch · 13/03/2026 18:03

Another saying piriformis syndrome, the pain is sciatic nerve impingement, there are certain stretches which temporarily relieve it, try them and this will confirm the diagnosis. Only thing helps mine Is ibruphren/time and less sitting down 🤣
I also realised that i tend to sit with left leg crossed over right, when I remember to limit this it seemed to improve so perhaps assess if anything your doing is exacerbating it👍

Thanks all, I will look in to those things. I just want to be able to sit down! I've done a lot of driving these past few weeks and it's got noticeably worse.

Try sitting on a wedge cushion in the car as it tilts the pelvis into a different position. But yes lots of clutch changing irritates mine. I’ve had it for 18yrs and now manage it with daily 10-20min yoga stretches, walking and cycling can help loosen the joint if walking is too painful. Ice instead of heat. Good luck it’s not nice to deal with but you can manage it.
if the pain moves or impacts going to the loo you could have disc issues (had that to), the pain will be excruciating. May Need a mri then plus possibly steroid injections

RealLifeClanger · 14/03/2026 08:35

I tried some of the piriformis stretches / self test things and I'm not sure if it's that now. It seems to be mostly around the sit bone. Done a bit of research and I'm wondering if it's ischial bursitis or hamstring tendonitis. Think I'll have to go to a physio!

My son has had a steroid injection for bursitis (private healthcare through work), unfortunately unless have that or can afford an mri a lot of diagnosis is guesswork🤷 (even from physios as I work with loads of them). I thought mine might be bursitis over greater trochanter as that's where it started, couldn't lie on left side at all. Over a few months it has improved by about 90% without treatment. If it gets too uncomfortable/I'm fed up of the niggling pain i just take one dose of ibruphren which settles it. Sounds likely that could have been all the sitting driving caused it, mine defo gets worse from too long sat on the sofa since semi retirement.........on mumsnet😉

@Mossstitch that's interesting, thanks. I guess it could be several things in that area. I've done a few stretches and trying to strengthen the whole pelvic area as it feels quite weak these days.
