Can I give calpol to DD who is teething?

DD is screaming in pain. I have tried dentinox/bongella , teething rings, teething powders, and nothing is working for her.
Can I give her calpol, she is 7mo.

yes, God, yes, it's 5 ml for her age, don't underdose her, she's in pain!

She can have a 2.5 ml dose of baby nurofen on top of that too.

Please don't underestimate teething pain, it hurts so much.

DustyTV · 17/06/2008 17:53

lapin I've heard of medised, but I didn't think it was recommended for children under 12mo.

It's not recommended for under 12 months now, but it did used to be recommended for babies, so if Lapin hasn't had a baby recently, she wouldn't know!

but Calpol and Nurofen are recommended and are very safe and effective pain killers.

DustyTV · 17/06/2008 17:57

colditz, really she can have that much. I only have calpol in the house though so I'll have to get DH to bring some baby nurofen in on his way home from his guitar lesson.

Thanks everyone.

Whats changed wrt medised, how come it isn't recommended for babies anymore? It sounds like I could do with some of it for DD is it good.

Yes you can, have yuo tried the teething granules called TEETHA they work better

DustyTV · 17/06/2008 18:00

Lapin, I take it medised will take pride and place in my medicine cupboard when DD is older

jodyray, I have used them and they dont make any difference for DD I have even used frozen fruit in a net bag (that my auntie got for me from Spain) and even that doesn't help her.

Ah Medised. Saved my sanity. I still give it to DS - he is nearly 20 months old, although I have to tell the pharmacist that it is for his (fictional) 3 year old sibling in order to buy it.

SmugColditz · 17/06/2008 18:04

It's because of some slight seditive ingredient, the Daily Mail heard that mothers' lives were getting slightly easier so they whipped the medical industry up into a frenzy and now a pharmacist won't sell to you if your child is under one.

Ds2 is 2.2 though, and he always had it, from about 6 months, as it is extremely effective against colds.

I try not to give it to my 5 year old, it makes him wet the bed!

but Yes, I checked my own calpol, your daughter can have one 5 ml spoonful every 4 to 6 hours, and no more than four doses in 24 hours, no more frequently than 4 hourly, and that is advice from the side of the box, NOT FROM ME.

DustyTV · 17/06/2008 18:20

Oooh yes the Daily Mail, we really mustn't let mothers lives get any easier must we

So looks like I will have to wait another 5 months to pull out the big gun medised

I've given DD a 5ml dose and I'm going to take her out for a walk in the pushchair as it always seems to calm her.

thanks everyone

I dont think medised is sold for the under 2's now due to overdosing by some parents - it is due to the anti-histamine. Calcold and Calpol night have the same ingredients and isnt for under 2's either. I tend to use nurofen for children for my lo's as they seem to get better pain relief than using calpol.

I checked the medised website and it is definitely only for over 2's whereas it used to be suitable from 3 months.

daily mail article

DustyTV · 20/06/2008 11:39

I got some baby nurofen it does work but says on the info leaflet not to use for more than 3 days. I have been using it for 3 days up until now. So what else can I use for DD as she is crying in pain now and again but keeps letting these small wining noises out.

DD is munching on her hands, I've given her some dentinox but I dont know what to do.
