Private healthcare

I have clearance from my private medical insurance that I can undergo a reconstructive procedure that I need, which is great news, but I’m confused by how to go about finding a consultant.

The op I need is quite niche, many of the consultants list generalised areas on their profiles so how do you know you are booking a consultation with someone who can do what you need? I’ve also had a lot of scans and imaging on the nhs but they are taking so long to come up with a date and plan I feel private healthcare will be faster. Will the consultant have access to these scans?

If anyone has experience of this it would be good to hear it!

Usually your insurance would sent you a starting list of consultants to contact / research.
Do you know who would do it on the NHS? They may also work privately or recommend someone who can.

The consultant in my nhs trust that is assigned to me doesn’t do robotic or laparoscopic surgery which is what I really want, I know it is possible in a lot of cases as I know people who have had the same procedure.

You can email their medical secretaries and ask (that’s what I did before an initial booking recently) depending on your insurer they will sometimes give you a list if you ask.

scans you can get to give to surgeons by doing some kind of FOI request (not sure about the actual details) or you can often get scans again on the insurance if the dr recommends

The procedure is to repair damage from a caesarean so ideally they would use the scans I’ve already had, they will need them to understand where the damage is (bladder damage). Someone from my insurer is calling me tomorrow so they may advise me.
