What the heck keeps biting me at night? 😳

No, I don't think it's bed bugs.

I keep getting bitten in bed, but I'm pretty sure it's not bed bugs as we've not been anywhere to stay on holiday etc to bring anything back.

I've had a few bites on my waist, with one on my groin, another on my inner thigh by my knee, and a couple more on my right foot

Nobody else in the family is being bitten. I've changed the bed today, vacuumed the mattress and bedroom, and closed the windows. It could possibly be fleas, but our cat is up to date with her flea treatment.

Or.. it could be something on my bed ftom outside, as I often leave my bed to air and the window is sometimes open.

Pic of bites if this helps - it's just so annoying lol 😆 🙄

You don't have to go on holiday to have a chance of bringing bed bugs home.

Even with flea treatment a flea could still jump on cat and cat bring it home, it won't die straight away. Cant see the pic as probably being approved

flossydog · 09/03/2026 00:27

Sounds like fleas despite the cat being up to date.

Smaller chance, but it could be an allergy reaction— have you recently changed the detergent for the bedding?

newdesktop · 09/03/2026 00:35

No picture yet, but bedbug bites are usually 3 in a row.

If you use light-coloured sheets, you'll see the little black dots that they leave.

PP is right - they're not just from traveling.

And the fact that only you are bitten might be deceptive - you might be the only one reacting to the bites - everybody reacts differently.

It's odd that it would be biting just me in bed, as my youngest daughter co-sleeps sometimes and she's not been bitten. The cat hasn't been scratching from what I can tell, and I remember when our other cat had fleas, i wasn't bitten at all.

Plus the cat doesn't come in my bedroom at all, and tends to be with my eldest DD most, and I've not seen any bites on her at all.

Hmm, not changed the detergent recently AFAIK but I will ask my DH as he did the last food order with it.

If they are very red and itchy without the hard centre or puncture of a mozzy, I reckon flea eggs have hatched. Some of the flea treatments are less effective than previously.

Vacuum mattress, pillows and duvet on both sides and spray with Indorex. Treat the cat(s) with felpreva three monthly - from the vet.

Antihistamine will help.

I wish I did not know this.

Absolutely really itchy and quite hive like. But I can see a little puncture mark on the ones on my feet, which makes me hopeful it is mosquito bites not sodding fleas!

Is the centre flaring and a bit hard when the bites flare? If not, I reckon they are flea bites - sorry.

Racheyroo1974 · 10/03/2026 14:35

I think its a gnat bite. Try some antihistamine.

Hope you manage to sort it out. If it was fleas I think your family might have flea bites too.xxx

Twasasurprise · 10/03/2026 15:39

Likely mosquitos are getting in and you are the tastiest in the family. That's my role in my family and I'm allergic so get a horrendous reaction to boot.

Do you use prescription flea treatment from the vet?

RoniaCheetah · 10/03/2026 16:05

I had the same thing this week. Over two nights had bites on both of my legs and DH had none. We have no pets so not fleas. I do get bitten by mozzies and midges more than my family. Have changed beds etc and had none since those two nights. Drove me MAD for a few days though.

Newgirls · 10/03/2026 16:33

Me too! Do we get mossies in England in March? Not sure what gnats are… will look up

DinoLil · 10/03/2026 16:39

Not sure if it helps, but I kept getting bitten at night. No pets at the time, hadn't been away and was this time of year. I was complaining about it to a friend and she said to use sun lotion with mosquito repellant and spray it on every night. Crazy but it worked! Two nights and no more bites and didn't use the sun lotion stuff again. And I live in the SE so it's not exactly tropical in March!

catipuss · 10/03/2026 20:15

You weren't necessarily bitten at night some bites take a few hours to come up. I was getting bitten by something in the garden but the bites didn't really get annoying until the next day. Do you have pets, fleas. or like me a garden with lots of bity things.

Some people get bad reactions to flea bites and some don't. I get terrible reactions.

PeonyPatch · 10/03/2026 20:18

Is it your husband?

WhoStoleAllTheUserNames · 10/03/2026 20:30

We were in a flat with fleas (didn’t know at the time, but it was infested). DS’s lower legs were covered in bites, I had a couple, the rest of the family didn’t have any. And I’d been crawling around cleaning the disgusting skirting, so you’d think I’d have most,

I think they were more in the curtains than the carpets (it was otherwise empty).

I’ve also had them at home from the cats when I used a different flea treatment (frontline) and it did not work.

I’m itching now…

Yes, we do use prescription flea treatment but our cat's due her next one but can't be given it until she has another checkup at the vet's.

I got some flea tablets from Pets at Home, and hopefully that will kill any.

I agree with you about mosquitoes though- when I was a child, I had horrible bites on holiday in Spain. My whole forearm swelled up really badly 😢

I've had this OP. I visit my mum and I get covered in bites and nobody else does. She has a visiting cat and I am sure his owners are up to date with flea treatment too but I think the fleas are getting too clever.

Last time I visited her I was fine but the time before I came home with about 10 bites!
