I have been taking fluroxetine for 30 years and I am 60 years old. I was not depressed but regularly felt anxious and i often felt tearful . After my initial consultation with a GP, I have never had a conversation with any Doctor and i just get repeat prescription every two months. My question is this - has anyone else taking it long term and if so has weaning yourself off it been positive or negative? I would of course only do so after consulting a doctor but as I get older i am much more aware of what meds i take. I have also taken wegovy for a couple of years and although no interaction is listed , i do wonder if my lack of weight loss has been down to the prozac.

I have been on different ADs for the last 26 years and have never been able to come off them although have been on quite low dose for a number of those years. If you do decide to reduce just make sure that you do it really slowly and with medical advice.

25 years mostly on fluoxetine for me - prescribed for anxiety, not depression. I had 2-3 periods off it in the earlier years but I got increasingly anxious each time, so went back on. I haven’t tried to come off it during the last 16 years and don’t imagine I’ll try again - no real issues with it.

Been in anti depressants since 1999 and have no intention of coming off them. I’m 54 now. My life gets more shit each year so I don’t think it would be a good idea to stop.

27 years on fluoxetine, tried to reduce it i
several times without success.

I'm 61 and have been on a low dose of paroxetine (Seroxat) for 28 years. I don't think I can come off it at this stage, so I don't intend to. It keeps me feeling 'normal', so I'll take that.

Sorry to high jack @Hopthegoodgod but just wondered what kind of doses you are all on. I am post menopausal and been hit by a horrible blip. Had been ok on a lowish dose of a tricyclic - equivalent of about 8 mg of Prozac - but will probably need to increase as the self help stuff just doesn’t seem to be working. I think I’m past the point of caring about getting off them. Just want to feel ok.

Me too moved from fluoxitine to citalopram and been on it for 26 years - I have had terrible depression in the past and still get it so the dosage has gone up and down. I got horrendous PND when I had the children but I do wonder about the l9ng term impact.

Goatblu · 09/03/2026 08:14

Also been on fluoxetine for 20 odd years. I did try to reduce it a few times over the years but the depression floored me so now I just accept that they're a necessary drug for me to function.

I also lost over 5stone on mounjaro so luckily it didn't seem to impact the effectiveness for me.

GloiredeDijon · 09/03/2026 08:21

Took fluoxetine for about 10 years, came off it cold turkey with no issues.
I have never heard of it affecting weight unlike several other mental health meds.

XDH was put on Seroxat in 1994 after his DF died. He has tried to come off it at GPs' insistence a number of times, but as soon as he reduces the dose he starts to self harm and becomes depressed again.

He has now been advised that it would be inappropriate to make any further attempts and I expect that he will now be on them for the rest of his life.

NorthernDancer · 14/03/2026 17:39

I'm on the app and can't edit, so hsve come back to ssy that several attempts to move him from Seroxat to Citalopram have also failed for the same reason.
