What helps you when you know a migraine is starting?

Has anyone found that you can stop a migraine from developing when you get the first signs? I’ve realised that my first sign is my vision going blurry and black spots, then gradually less vision. The headache, sickness, etc. usually come after this. Is there anything I can do as soon as I get the first signs to try to prevent it developing?

The lack of oestrogen before my period affects me - have slept better post HRT and had fewer migraines. Had a nasty cluster of them last month - am on Vydura for prevention.

Thank you so much everyone. I had a few migraines in my late teens/early 20s (one was so bad I was rushed to A&E and doctors there thought I was having a stroke). I then only had a couple of debilitating migraines in my 30s but have had a few in the last year (I’m now 42).

I’m a primary school teacher and the migraine I had on Thursday, started whilst teaching a class of 30 Year 6 children. I had no other adult in the classroom and my vision started to go. I was talking to the whole class, writing on the board, tried to keep going but couldn’t properly see what I was writing. I quickly gave the children something to do, drank lots of water and took ibuprofen but realised I had no choice other than to try to get a message to another adult. This escalated to me needing to be taken home by the headteacher (I wouldn’t have been safe to drive) and the deputy head teaching my class for the rest of the day. Everyone was really kind, but this situation is not ideal, so I’m trying to get ideas of anything I could have done differently that might have meant I would have not become so unwell/had to go home.

Lots of the ideas here of lying in a dark room, etc. are great but I need to try to find things that might help if this happens again when I’m teaching (and the only adult with 30 children).

I’ll also try to get a GP appointment to see if I can get any medication but no idea how soon that appointment will be!

Thank you. Much better today. Just trying to be as prepared as I can be for if/when it happens again.

Anyone else yawn excessively before a migraine? It’s usually one of my indicators that one’s coming on. I take a Sumatriptan tablet and lie down in a dark room.

I yawn! Its one of the first signs for me along with numb patches on my face and muddling words up, long before the aura starts.
Aspirin, strong coffee and a bag of crisps can stave the headache off for me, provided i get it down me at the first aura sign.
