Tonsillitis or Glandular Fever or both - at the end of my tether

I hope someone has some sage advice, as I have been to the GP several times already and we are not sure what is going on yet.
DD2 is 16 and 3 weeks ago came down with horrible tonsillitis & fever, she could barely swallow or move, she felt awful. We were on holiday (typical) and I took her to the pharmacy, who gave me amoxicillin clauvate to take for 5 days. Improvement was very slow but by the end of the 5 days she was able to board a plane although she was still ill and the sore throat was still there although a bit better.

Following week wasn't well enough to go into school, felt shattered, still had a cold/cough and terrible sore throat. Went to the GP who gave a new antibiotic (penicillin) and 5 days in still same symptoms. Tonsills look very big and nothing has changed. A little better in herself in that this week she made it into school for most of the day but throat still hurts, has a headache etc... been back to the GP mid week who did tests for full blood count, strep A swab and testing for Glandular fever.

The first two tests have come back clear but the glandular fever one still isn't back but she is saying her throat feels worse and had to go and get Ibuprofen and it is looking worse (she sent me a photo). I phoned the GP who gave me more (different) antibiotics but at this stage was wondering whether anyone has any advice. She will be starting her GCSEs in just over a month and in this state.... if anyone had glandular fever, is this consistent with it? I know we'll get results but not sure what to do in the meantime and if it isn't also not sure what else to try :(

For anyone still reading this, I wanted to give an UPDATE
Whilst waiting for the lab tests we did a rapid test we bought online and it was positive for glandular fever. The GP's tests also came back today and they were positive as well. So she does get glandular fever.
Just don't get fobbed off with the rash thing - I had to fight with the GP to get her tested and go back twice as they kept saying as she had Amoxicilin and no rash it was very unlikely to be Glandular fever, even though she had all the other symptoms. Clearly she is in the minority but it can still be that.
It's a relief to know what's wrong with her.
Also - the antibiotics stil worked for her throat, so you can develop secondary infections, so she likely had tonsillitis too.

DD2 is ok, just very very tired. Going to try and battle with school now as she has a GCSE already next week and would like to get her some breaks/special consideration, but who knows. Important thing is we know and she is getting better!
Thanks for all the advice on this thread, it was very comforting and helpful.

Please speak to the head of year at school about special consideration for the exams an about her attendance leading up to and during them. Glandular fever can be so nasty and she could end up with chronic fatigue syndrome if she doesn’t rest enough. Even post viral fatigue for a couple of years afterwards would be bad enough.

you will need evidence from the GP of her positive glandular fever test and you will need to pay them to write a letter to apply for special consideration. Even then it’s only an extra 1.5% added to her final grades. She really shouldn’t be going to school at the moment unless for an actual exam or for an important revision session. The more she rests now, the better shape she will be in during the actual exams. If she doesn’t rest properly now (actual bed rest), you run the risk of her being too ill to sit the exams at all.

That's really good advice
Sh3 only jas 2 weeks left and has 3 exams next wrel.(art) which are a total of 10 hours and the school.has arranged for her to have rest breaks.

The week after we will.see hpw she feels but she is missing games/PE so might go for a few hours see how she feels. She then has over 3 weeks of resting, thank god. It's quite stressful for her....

@travelbanJust popped back on to say I’m glad your DD got the diagnosis and is hopefully feeling better. Just watch out for relapses and repeated tonsillitis infections. My DS first fell ill in the Sept of yr13 and spent that whole year feeling exhausted and getting repeated infections, including another bout of tonsillitis in the middle of his exams. Annoyingly as he refused to have the blood test we couldn’t request compensations and his results were definitely affected by the amount of schooling he missed.
