Do bad toenails in a child mean they are wearing the wrong shoes or do some people just have bad toenails?

DS is 2 years old and his toe nails are terrible.
They are brittle, dont grow evenly and when they do grow they are curved downwards so that they are curling flat against the front of his toes rather than straight out iyswim.

He has always had his feet measured properly and often and I usually only buy him fitted shoes. The only exceptions being trainers from Next (he is standard width) and crocs.

Why would he have such horrible toe nails and is there anything I can do to improve them??

He could have a fungal nail infection. It may be worth having the pharmacist have a look to see what he thinks. If he has got something a bit icky, there are lots of treatments available...

I thought that LL, but I'm fairly sure that I heard somewhere that in this day and age it is extremely unlikely that there would be enough of a deficiency to be noticeable in your nails/teeth. It's worth thinking about though if all else fails...

There are some conditions which mean that toe nails grow a bit odd. I don't know any details though. I would take him to a chiropodist /podiatrist and get him looked at.

I think it's more likely you need to adjust his diet tbh and double check he doesn't have a fungal infection of the nails

My Ds's toenails are brittle, don't grow evenly, and some curve up and some down. Exactly like mine when I was a child, and to some extent now.

As long as they aren't thickened or discoloured its just one of those things - mine just improved with time.

2point4kids · 17/06/2008 08:52

They are not gunky or look infected. They are clean and normal colour.
He drinks at least a pint of full fat milk a day and although he hasnt got a large appetite he does eat anything and everything in terms f variety (a lot of veg etc).

He is very accident prone thouugh and is often falling over/stubbing toes/bashing his legs...

Is the chiropodist something I need to get referred from the Dr for?

My ds' toenails are the same, I just try to make sure I cut them regularly. They don't cause him any pain so I'm not too worried.

My Dd's toenails are like this- curl round the ends of her toes- and have been from birth.
Funnily enough DH's are like this....
I think its genetic- there's no question of an infection in her case, and she has well- fitted shoes.
