The pill (norethisterone) and Plantar Fasciitis

Hello, has anyone found they have developed Plantar Fasciitis after being on Norethisterone for contraception?

I’ve been on Norethisterone for around a year and a half, and last summer I’ve developed PF. It’s not easing at all, despite taking ibuprofen, Sulfasalazine (for rheumatoid arthritis which may or may not be linked) and doing all the PF exercises. I have put on a little weight, maybe a stone in a year and a half. I’m trying to lose it to see if that helps the pain.

has anyone found that it’s the pill that caused PF?
I’m considering coming off the pill and using another method of contraception and seeing if that help.

any advice appreciated. Thank you

It'll be your weight or footwear, not the pill. Its sooo painful though!. I found stretches and using KT tape (lots of videos on YouTube how to apply it) gave me relief from it but losing weight and proper shoes were what fixed it.

Can't speak to contraception, but what helped with PF for me was stretching my lower calf and achilles tendon. This was counterintuitive to me because my pain was at the bottom of the foot, but apparently it is often caused by tightness farther up the chain. Stretching pretty much resolved my problems completely even though I'm now running three times a week.

Probably this is not always the solution but maybe it helps someone.

Thank you both for your advice, I need to try something, I was hoping coming off the pill would be a relatively easy fix!

yes I’ll go back on the diet again, I’ve bought the insoles to help, and Skechers and they are helping a little.

@adviceonchildplease There are also special boots / straps you can wear over night, but these did not work for me at all. My PF was actually caused by tightness higher up the calf. Here are the stretches that helped me - google:

  • "Standing Wall Calf Stretch" (really noticed the difference here on the side with PF vs the one without, much tighter on the side with PF)
  • "achilles tendon stretch half kneeling"
If your problems come from a different place, these may not help, but worth trying, I guess.
