A few months back I woke up with a vertigo attack and my eyes was moving uncontrollably, I’ve had issues on and off since I went to the doctors after doing some simple tests at the doctors i was told I have BPPV and was given an epley maneuverer to do I’ve done it but I dont feel it as worked it’s got to the point the thought of going to sleep causes fear now, I’m fine on my right side minus some random vertigo when falling to sleep but if I lay on my left side it triggers attacks. The doctor did say to keep doing the maneuverer when I feel dizziness but is there anything else people have done tried or can recommend I’m so miserable I just want to sleep wake up and feel normal again

I found sleeping a little bit propped up so my head was definitely above the rest of my body helps. So either an extra pillow or I have an adjustable bed and have the head end up a little bit.

I completely empathise. I had this in 2023 and the anxiety I felt around going to bed was awful!
I did the epley manoeuvre a few times in one evening before it worked. It wasn’t pleasant and I did projectile vomit. But once it had worked, I didn’t get the spinning sensation again. I would suggest to keep giving it a go.

My stepdad also cut out all caffeine and alcohol when he suffered with it and said this helped him.

When I had this, I was referred to ENT, and they did the manoeuvre. It was successful, and my understanding is that it's difficult to do by yourself. I know that some McTimoney chiropractors are trained to do it, so maybe have a look locally. Wishing you some relief as it's awful !

Very hard to do by yourself. I would ring around physios or check to see if practice nurse can help .

Mine was hormone induced. I started taking the progesterone pill and haven’t had it since. I’m 47 so I think my hormones are out of whack. Once the pill stops working I’ll go on hrt.

I've had bppv and the epley manoeuvre worked for me. It's easy to do it wrong. Look at lots of YouTube tutorials first. Sometimes it takes a few goes.

Refer yourself to your local NHS physiotherapy department. There should be someone there who can perform a Hall Pike Dix test, then an Epley’s manoeuvre. That should sort it out.

fashionqueen0123 · 27/02/2026 21:43

I’ve done the Epley on myself when I’ve had this. I had it again the other night it was awful. Same sleeping on my right was fine. If I went to the left my eye was moving and room spinning.

I now sleep with 3 pillows. I read some being which said to sleep more upright for a while to try to prevent the ear crystals going back in the wrong place again. It seems to happen every couple of years to me

Chewbecca · 27/02/2026 21:49

I got rid of it using Beconase. Worth a try!

Chewbecca · 27/02/2026 21:50

(I think it opens up the ear canals a bit & helps the crystals dislodge so there is some logic)

Try and find a vestibular physio. I have Meniers but had a bit of BPPV too. I saw a private physio and then GP referred me to the balance clinic and the nurse there made sure I could do the Epley myself.
I also had some vestibular exercises that were straightforward but effective.

after reading your reply I did go an do the manoeuvre a few times each time it got easy still not fully gone so I suppose I’ll just have do it everyday and hope it eventually buggers off

Before your 1st attack OP- had anything changed?

I didn't have BPPV but a similar thing which my GP thought was a vestibular migraine. I'd had a crown put on a few weeks earlier and DH said I started grinding my teeth at night. The crown had been put on slightly wrong. Long story short, when I had the crown re-done correctly- I've never had an episode since! I've also heard of deep teeth roots hitting nerves and causing similar issues.

Not that I am aware of I did loose a lot of blood which resulted in severe iron and folic acids anaemia a few days before my first vertigo attack my elevens are still not fully restored yet but I was told by my doctor that it was unlikely to causing it although I do still wonder it myself
