Fit test at 85.2 and calprotectin 260 in young adult

My ds is 19 and due to blood when going toilet and constipation he had a fit test and the results came back as fit 85.2 and calprotectin 260. At first we were not told about the calprotectin we didn't even know they tested that we only found out with the letter NHS have sent him. I've done the stupid thing and googled and don't like what I see and it's worrying me.

His colonoscopy is booked and I feel sick to my stomach. Can anyone give any information on any conditions they have with raised levels please. The letter says 2ww urgent suspected colorectal cancer pathway so that's terrified us even more.

Thankyou

I would imagine something like fissures / piles would be very likely. Or IBD. Much more likely than something sinister - hopefully you can soon rule out any real nasties. I'm sure I've seen people on here say with crohns / similar they have numbers in the thousands.

The waiting is the worst, but it is all you can do. Try not to panic, most positive fit tests aren't cancer and yiu are better having a shorter wait time to find out whatever it is.

My FIT Test was 200 and put on fast-track for suspected colorectal cancer. Was scheduled for a colonoscopy which I had. It was fine in the end. Blood was from internal piles. The prep drink is pretty disgusting though the procedure after that was okay

Crohn's or ulcerative colitis?

Neither is a picnic but medication improving all the time.

Miracle29 · 24/02/2026 13:03

Thanks everyone. I have heard the drink isn't very nice and he's certainly not looking forward to no food then day before either. He said he wasn't aware they tested for the other Faecal test as it wasn't mentioned so we were quite surprised when that came back high on the letter. He was also told his fit test was 40 but the letter states 85 so very confusing for him.

His symptoms are basically just he can go couple of days without going toilet and does say sometimes he feels like he's not finished but this is rare alongside this obviously the blood which was what prompted him to see the GP and also low iron. He's never suffered any bowel problems growing up and doesn't complain about pain or anything like that. He does suffer nosebleeds and I have read that can sit in the stomach leading to positive fit test though not sure if it's true.

The calprotectin test is to test for the levels of inflammation. The higher the result the more chance of something like crohns or ulcerative colitis.

A colonoscopy is a good move. The prep beforehand isn't great, but it is necessary to clear the bowel before the procedure. He will need to eat a low residue diet a few days before the prep, and don't eat or drink anything coloured.
Good luck with it all.

With the prep, some people find it better to chill first, drink through a straw, have something clear like lemonade to chug alongside, or extra strong mints. It's great that he's not ignoring it, or embarrassed to go, as it would be quite common at that age.

Boredofmyguts · 25/02/2026 16:22

Calprotectin isn’t that high, mine has been in the 2000s and I still haven’t got a diagnosis after cameras and scans. Be prepared to push for answers if the colonoscopy doesn’t show anything - make sure they are going to take biopsies as colitis can be microscopic.

Ds has drank the prep and he's currently on the toilet but it sounds so bad I feel so useless. Without sounding gross it's like a constant tap once he starts I can actually hear him as the living room is unfortunately under the bathroom. Is it normal for it to sound like a tap for ages? And will tomorrow's dose be this bad too?

@Miracle29 yes, it's very normal. The prep is to completely clear his bowel He needs his stools to be clear so they can get a proper look at his bowel.

With today's prep it will be the same for a while, but it should ease off as he has nothing left to clear out. Hopefully he has something like sudocreme to help with being sore?
Good luck, I hope it all goes well.

Thankyou. He's taken the second one and it's slightly easing off now. He's very nervous about today and has picked to be sedated. The worse part is he is so hungry now and can't have anything. His appointment isn't until 3.15 so a very long wait for him.
