UTI not shifting

Started with a UTI on Friday and got a 3 day course of nitro on Saturday afternoon. It’s no better now, my gp has just prescribed me another 3 days and asked to bring a sample tomorrow. I thought nitro usually worked quickly? Has anyone else had a stubborn UTI?

It’s really rare that 3 days is enough for me. 9/10 times I need a 5+ day course.

Do your symptoms start to improve in the first 48 hours? I can’t say mine are any better!

Years ago I has UTI symptoms, but the urine test came back as thrush! I was shocked because I had no thrush symptoms and convinced it was a UTI. Hopefully the urine test shows what exactly it is, because antibiotics won't kill a fungus (if its that).

GPs always seem to offer a 3-day course. I always ask for 7 days' supply and take it for 7 days.

If It’s working I’ll usually know by halfway through the course. Drink loads of water, avoid sugar like the plague, take d-mannose, painkillers, rest.

It's great they are sending a sample, that'll get ti the bottom of it, but yes its common for resistance to nitro. Candida in urine is rare, but definitely happens. I read these culture plates and see it several times a week

Another thought- is a partner re-infecting you?

7 days minimum ….otherwise you run the risk of it getting embedded….can then take ages to clear…..they would never give a man a 3 day course for uti….even my cat got a 7 day course of abx

I doubt it as I had a baby not that long ago, I haven’t let DH anywhere near me for a while!

I have loads of UTIs.
3 day sometimes work. 7 days sometimes needed. Sometimes 2 courses. Sometimes it's just cystitis and didn't need antibiotics.
Sometimes I've had thrush with uti type symptoms.

If people are resistant to nitro what is prescribed instead? I was hoping the gp would try a different antibiotic.

Same here thought it was uti but it was actually thrush

I’ve had Trimethoprim I think before. And Cefolexin. The results should tell you what you need to clear it. I get them quite a bit. It really helps to cut out alcohol and caffeine for me until it has gone.

It’s not ‘people’ that are resistant….it’s the bacteria….mine were usually ecoli….but the recurrent uti I had was klebisella……it took 6 months to completely shift….im now on daily Hiprex as a preventative

Yep exactly, They'll test to see what bacteria, or yeast is there, grow it up and see what antibiotics are effective against it. I'm not actually sure what the second line antibiotic is for UTI's, I deal more with the bacteria than the patients tbh!

But your doctor will know these things, and be guided by the lab results. Best of luck!

Pinkstuffs · 25/02/2026 17:44

@IsThisLifeNow so the sample I collected was unusable due to red blood cells? I thought it would be normal to have these as an indicator of a UTI?
