TtC - when to talk to GP

I am 31, never been pregnant. DH and I have been trying for 9 months. At what point is it reasonable to go the GP?

Context - both healthy, non smoking, not overweight, no obvious reasons why there would be an issue.

At first we weren't doing anything except having standard unprotected sex (aside from folic acid and vitamin D). The last four months though we have been more rigorous about things, to the point now that it is more of an anxiety each month than something exciting. When I got my period the other day it was just really disappointing again.

The last few months I have been tracking ovulation closely, having sex more regularly at those times. We've been trying some of the less scientifically valid things too - DH not ejaculating for a few days prior to my most fertile time, me having an orgasm after him (although now I read that having one before is better!) etc.

I have even started not moving much afterwards! The last two months I have also used Preseed. Still no joy.

Would now be an acceptable time to seek medical advice? Is there anything else I can do?

I think it’s 2yrs of trying at that age when they start to do investigations. If you’re worried, you could look at private tests, but honestly nine months isn’t a concern. I think the average is just over a year for people to become pregnant with no underlying issues.

The GP should refer anyone under 36 for tests after 1 year of trying to conceive with no known fertility problems.

Hope it happens for you soon!

After a year, you can see the GP and they should refer you for tests. We were referred and ended up paying privately to see the same consultant to save the six month wait, best money we spent as she saw immediately that my egg count was really low. We then had a six month wait for laparoscopy which showed my tubes are v twisty so we got referred for ivf. So from the beginning of ttc to ivf was about two years.
The consultant was reassuring that it sometimes does take longer than a year… although I remember how you are feeling and it’s so hard 🌷

Thank you everyone. It seems like I should wait. I am impatient!

I will be ovulating again in a week or so, so we will be trying again. Wish us luck!
