Why has my menstrual cycle changed?

Beauregard · 16/06/2008 14:22

I used to be on a regular 28 day cycle and now over the last 6 or 7 months my period is starting every 19 days and lasting for 7 days.
I am getting fed up of it now.

just googled it and got this

"Talk to your doctor if you notice any big change in your cycle. It?s especially important to check with your doctor if you have three or more cycles that last longer than 7 days or are very heavy. Also call if you have bleeding between your periods or pelvic pain that is not from your period."

Flier · 16/06/2008 14:36

hmm, just found some more while googling.
Apparently, heavy coffee drinkers and heavy smokers can shorten menstrual cycles.
I know I've increased the amount of coffee I drink over the last year or so.

Beauregard · 16/06/2008 14:37

hmm dont drink much coffee and i only drink decaff and gave up smoking 3 years ago

Beauregard · 16/06/2008 14:46

Why do i always seem to be at the doctors?

I get embarrassed about going ,im sure the receptionists must think i am a hypocondriac

OP posts:
Flier · 16/06/2008 14:47

do they have a well woman clinic?

Beauregard · 16/06/2008 14:48

Know how you feel - I never ever went to the doctors till about 3 years ago, and now I'm in there every other week My periods are wieird at the mo too - have been referred for scan. How old are you? could it be peri-menopause?

SubRosa · 16/06/2008 19:29

I had this for years, and the gynaecologist said it was caused by a lack of progesterone. Apparently, if your cycle is short it can be anovulatory, which basically means that you don't ovulate. (Although I don't understand how you still get a period).

It's probably a good idea to mention it to the GP, or if you'd prefer, go to the local Sexual Health clinic.

Beauregard · 16/06/2008 21:39

I am 32 so hope it isnt the perimenopause

notnowbernard · 16/06/2008 21:43

mine are all over the shop

totally random... haven't had a period for about 9 weeks (am NOT pregnant)

saw the GP, did range of blood tests... all normal

he thinks it's my cycle still adjusting after pg and bf (though stopped bf earlier this year and even then was only feeding once a day)

mumma2cjh · 16/06/2008 21:50

GOsh Im worried now after reading this!!! Im 41 had my first baby 3 years ao. NEver had ANY probs with periods before or after but last few months I have started dead on every 23 days - not on the pill or coil etc... I used to come on every 26-27 days.

Im only on for around 3 days - do you think I should go to docs? I wasnt concerned until I read this!

SubRosa · 16/06/2008 22:24

Please don't worry. (Easy to say, I know). Unless you're having other symptoms, such as going to the loo every half hour or severe pelvic pain, then there's probably nothing seriously wrong.
