DRY SOCKET INFECTION- HELP ME!!!

I had both my bottom wisdom teeth out last Thursday. Very difficult extractions, it took over an hour and a half to get them out. My right one had a small root fracture but it was too close to the nerve to retrieve.

I have dry socket in both of them. Have had them packed and have been on amoxicillin for a week now. Ended up in urgent care centre yesterday with a 40 degree fever and I passed out. They wouldn’t do anything because they thought it was tooth related. Back to the dentist I went and had them repacked and prescribed metronidazole (haven’t started yet- terrified of side effects. Due to start Monday) fever has now gone though!

I am still in a lot of pain. I have the most rancid, foul taste in my mouth coming from the sockets. It tastes like rotten flesh 🤢. It was packed with that tobacco looking stuff- the clove oil packing. What I’m tasting is NOT the clove oil this is not how it tasted when it was put in. Have I got food stuck in there? Or is this the potential infection?! Or is this how the packing ends up tasting when you need it changed? Saltwater rinses are making it more painful although I am doing them as well as corsodyl. Please someone help me my dentist isn’t open until Monday and 111 can’t send me anywhere 😭😭😭

Until you finish the course can you pump and dump your breast milk . If baby is in NICU ask nurses advice . They may have an alternative supply until you are able to feed agsin. It's unfortunate timing but it is important that you get rid of any infection. Lack of fever doesnt mean it's gone . Baby needs you to be well in yourself too.

currently breastfeeding my 30 weeker preemie in the NICU. Can’t take anything stronger than paracetamol and ibuprofen! :(

You must tell the NICU staff about the metronidazole.

From the breastfeeding network site- should be fine. But agree mentioning to staff NICU is also advisable- but breast milk preferable.

Metronidazole (Flagyl®) has been said to impart an unpleasant taste to your milk and cause your baby to reject it. It has not been possible to trace the original research which suggested this or who tasted the milk and made this conclusion. Babies do not appear to be concerned by the frequent variation in the taste of breastmilk which occurs naturally. Occasionally it can alter the colour of the milk. In the US single doses of 2g are used and breastfeeding is temporarily interrupted. In the UK doses of 200-400milligrammes three times a day are used and breastfeeding can continue. Intra-venous use does not appear to pose any difficulties in lactation.
An oral dose 400milligrammes three times daily produced milk levels of 15.52 μg/ml and 200milligrammes three times a day an equivalent dose to the infant of 3milligrammes/kg/day compared to the dose of 22.5milligrammes/kg/day given therapeutically to children. Anecdotally, increased maternal consumption of garlic masks the taste of the Metronidazole.

Extra care is needed if the baby is premature.

I had dry socket when I was pregnant, could only take paracetamol and it didn’t touch the sides - I remember screaming in agony. Worse pain ever. I had to have it packed, I just stayed in bed with a pillow curled around my head.
