Doxycycline

I’ve been prescribed doxycycline for a sinus infection that just won’t clear up on its own, was given this one as I’m allergic to penicillin.
The prescriber really emphasised the possible side effects and I then looked it up when I got home and now I’m a bit worried about taking it! I’ve purposely delayed starting it as I’m out all day tomorrow with young children so didn’t want to risk upset stomach etc
is it as bad as I’ve read about? I’ve to take a 5 day course and obviously want rid of the sinus issues but I’m a bit reluctant to make myself feel worse given the absolute horror stories I’ve read about this antibiotic!
DP described it as evil!

I’m on a permanent dose of Doxycycline and will be for the rest of my life. I’ve never been told to stay upright for 30 mins after taking it, how odd!

Have you never bothered to read the manufacturer's instructions that come with it?

NailsHairNipsHeels · 23/02/2026 19:07

Well…I’ve still not started taking them! I know it’s ridiculous but I never have to take tablets so I’ve got myself stressed about adverse reactions and possibly having to be off work if I react! Utterly ridiculous but I’m definitely starting them tomorrow, so I can take it on an empty stomach as recommended.
I’ve been arguing in my head all day just to get it over with but they’re still all in the box.

I had it for a couple of weeks for sinus issues. Only adverse effects were photosensitivity- in Scotland in winter despite Factor 50. Bad indoor lighting set it off as well. Best not to read the side effects of any drug until you’ve necked the first one otherwise you scare yourself shitless

Reinventedblanket · 23/02/2026 19:27

I've just finished 2 courses for sinus infection.
Absolutely fine once I remembered to only take them on a full stomach and not lie down for a few minutes afterwards. Appear to have done the job or at least got rid of the worst of the infection now.

whatisheupto · 23/02/2026 20:10

I had to take them during my two week summer holiday in the hot sun!! Not ideal. But I didn't get sunburnt despite being in the sun a bit. I used factor 50.
I found it best to take them with food as they did make me a bit nauseous otherwise. But nothing too bad , don't worry OP. You'll be fine.

No because I’ve never had any issues! I was on Lymecycline prior to Doxy which is very similar and never had any issues with that either

NailsHairNipsHeels · 23/02/2026 20:48

I’m putting my big girl pants on and I’ll take the first one tomorrow before work and second at tea time. I’ve looked them out and they’re sitting beside my work bag.
if the nurse hadn’t mentioned side effects and laboured the upset stomach and some hideous rash I’d be half way through the course!
I do have to start them, this sinus infection is getting worse and today even breathing through my nose gives me a headache! I want to feel better so I need to take the damn tablets

I’m currently taking it - a five day course, last dose tomorrow. The first day I was told to take two, which I did, together as soon as I got home. Apart from awful indigestion on the first day I’ve had no other issues at all.

mjf981 · 24/02/2026 05:37

I had it and it made me feel really really depressed for some reason.
It can also be ototoxic so if you hear any tinnitus or hearing issues, stop using it.

ILoveLeopard245 · 24/02/2026 05:44

I was really sick and unable to continue with it, it didn’t agree with me at all. I followed the instructions very carefully but it’s just one that I’m really sensitive to.

Natsku · 24/02/2026 06:00

I had to take it last year for pneumonia (along with amoxicillin for some reason), have IBS and didn't notice any issues beyond the weird taste in my mouth.

Nugg · 24/02/2026 06:03

Goodness I’ve been prescribed this for 3 months and am 4 days in!! I didn’t even read the leaflet 🤦🏼‍♀️ I take it first thing with all my other meds and a cuppa!!

The weird thing for me was that my three month supply came in dozens of large boxes each holding just 8 tablets each! Bizarre!

going to read one of my many leaflets now…!

Vivienne1000 · 24/02/2026 06:11

i took it for malaria prevention and had zero side effects. Then I had 3 weeks of a high dose following a nasty tick bite. I had early Lymes and had a much higher dose, which was brutal. But it was worth it. I could hardly eat and on top of the Lymes symptoms, it was rough.

NailsHairNipsHeels · 24/02/2026 09:40

@Nuggdon’t read it it’s enough to put you off! If the prescriber hasn’t laboured the upset stomach/rash etc I wouldn’t have given it a second thought! reading the leaflet it’s enough to put anyone off! 😂
I took it this morning and so far so good. If anything it’s helping me drink far more water. I do have a slight sore stomach but that’s not unusual for me TBH
