Raised Liver enzymes

I had some blood tests done by the nurse, mainly to measure my cholesterol to check it hadn’t gone up during menopause as I know it sometimes does.
My cholesterol levels were great which was very reassuring but the nurse then told me my liver enzyme levels were raised above usual levels and I’d have to go in to get them retested in 8 weeks ( and she asked how much I drink, which is under the recommended limit). My BMI is 22.
The same thing happened to my brother recently and it turned out he had coeliac disease ( without obvious digestive symptoms) so I will be having that test too.
How concerned should I be?

I had some lightly elevated ones on a blood test, and a repeat one came back fine.

Turns out it was because id done a gym workout the night before the first one, and if you’re really achey that can affect it! So might be nothing

could also be post viral.
or fatty liver (even if you are slim)
so many possible reasons which is why they re-test to see if it needs further investigation.

I don’t think 10 mins of fast walking on my walking pad would be enough to do that!
I will try not to think about it too much!

Can also be caused by a diet high in UPFs with a still healthy BMI. And it's a side effect of statins in some people... you mentioned cholesterol, have you been prescribed anything for it?

Wbeezer · 18/02/2026 19:44

Pretty healthy diet, low saturated fat, cooking from scratch, upped fibre recently. My husband has to watch his cholesterol so we improved what was a fairly good diet ( at least at mealtimes) by cutting out most unhealthy snacks. I’d be surprised if I had a fatty liver but I know you can be slim but have visceral fat ( and I’m not very fit at all although gently increasing activity)

Not prescribed anything for cholesterol, as is always been normal but I hadn’t had it checked for 18 years luckily its still good.

What element is raised? What they call “liver enzymes” don’t always relate to the liver

Wbeezer · 18/02/2026 20:08

I didn’t have pen and paper handy when the nurse phoned it was two enzymes beginning with A both above reference levels.
i need to pop in and get a copy of the results.

Ah mine is usually the ALP raised so I don’t know.

Thank you everyone who answered. After doing a bit more research I realise its possible that the problem might be that I had the test first thing on Monday morning and wasn’t advised to avoid alcohol, I don’t drink a lot but have wine with my dinner on Friday, Saturday and Sunday off there’s some left. Apparently this can be enough to raise some levels above normal. Ill a break from wine before my next test.

I don’t usually have breakfast until after the test as that can raise mine.
