Ds (nearly 3) very hot and apparently delerious?

ds has been feverish since Friday and off colour a bit longer than that. We thought it was probably teething as his nappies have been bad, he has a cough, his cheeks are flushed and he wants to bite everything again - trip down memory lane as ds has had most of his teeth for a while now.

This morning he's been restless since 2 a.m., kept waking himself (and me!) up talking and really seems kind of out of it, like seemed genuinely convinced there was a snake in the room, kind of thing. It could just be the fact he's mostly asleep but I'm quite worried.

His temp last night was 38.8, this morning 38.5.

Will give the surgery a ring when he wakes up next but quite worried, any advice?

not sure about the delerious bits - my boys never make much sense when they wake up in the night.

If temperature is stable or dropping you should be ok to wait until surgery opens. Have you given him calpol or the like ?

Give him water too - he may be getting dehydrated a bit.

Thanks throckenholt, he's had quite a lot to drink, which is good. Had some calpol but I don't think it helped much.

He's never done this feverish sleep talking before, I think that's what's thrown me. He's been relatively well in himself over the weekend, a bit more clingy and more easily upset than usual but basically okay.

lapin, I didn't check his temperature again after the calpol as he fell asleep! Will check it again when he wakes up.

Our surgery is pretty good about fitting in appointments for sick kids (and in fairness given how often I have to go there for dh's health problems, I ought to be gold in the frequent flier programme if only they did one ) but we have a couple of Walk-In Centres as well so should be okay.

38.5 not that high .. but kids can get altered when temp spikes and middle of the night is the worst because they're asleep too so it's impossible to tell if its sleep

you need to

keep him stripped down to a nappy
give calpol and nurofen interspersed
use a fan if you've got one

under 39.5 not really that high IMO .. I only worry if calpol and nurofen don't bring down temps

My ds had an ear infection that came on in the night last week. He didn't have a particularly high temperature but he also was not quite with it, somewhere between asleep and awake and had some odd moments. Ear infections can make them very fretful and restless. Twiglett's advice is good and if you can get a doc to see him and check for things like ear infections, that will be great.

Thanks fluffy - I had glue ear as a child so am paranoid about ear stuff for ds! Will definitely get the GP to check for that. He's been having a lot of dark coloured wax coming out of his ears lately as well - related?
