Help me to stop these constant colds

Having been someone rarely troubled by colds, since last October I have been ill once a month with a cold that's put me in bed for a few days and then taken ages to go away. I've lost track of the tissues, meds etc that I've gone through. I'm so sick of plans being ruined and not being on form at work.
I'm slim, active, non smoker, excellent diet of fresh F and V, lots of protein, low alcohol.
What can I do to help prevent these infections?

That First Defence spray really works. You use it at the first sign of a cold - it changes the pH value of your nasal passages which means the cold virus can't replicate. Use it up to 4 times a day, plus as much sleep as you can manage. I've had signs of a cold 4 or 5 times over the winter, but thanks to the FD spray it's never lasted more than a day or two

Good luck, it's horrible being ill for long periods

Vitamin D
plenty of rest and recovery / when you feel better have another quiet week ?

SisterTeatime · 15/02/2026 17:39

First Defence definitely. Plus zinc lozenges.

Drink as much water and get as much sleep as you can. Wash you hands as much as you reasonably can, and use hand sanitiser.

Take Berocca every day for a month or two then just take normal multivitamins and, yes, vitamin d. Probiotics may be worth trying, and magnesium to help you sleep.

If you do feel ill, don’t go to work, don’t power through it, just get into bed and rest - sleep if possible. I’ve observed at work that people who keep going tend to be ill more often and for longer than those who stay off for a couple of days. As you keep getting ill, you do need to ensure you allow yourself to recover fully.

Here for some advice too, as i have had one cold after another since after Christmas

Another vote for 1st Defence and early nights.

Gargle with corsodyl mouthwash when you feel that first tickle in your throat. Lowers the amount of virus getting in. You actually feel it killing the germs 🦠! My mum was told this secret while having chemo.

Sunshineismyfavourite · 15/02/2026 17:53

I always use both first defence nasal spray at first sign of any sniffle and corsodyl mouthwash at first sign of a slight tickle. Done it for a few years now and it honestly works almost every time. I also take a Haliborange gummy multivitamin immune support each morning. DH does none of this and his colds are always more frequent and worse than mine. He has one at the moment - but I do make him sleep in the spare room when he has a cold to avoid any unnecessary contact too!

Echinacea- I use the little tablets- the second I feel like I am getting a cold. Always seems to ward it off. I also take vit C with Zinc

I am 40 and haven’t had a cold in a year (I am also a primary teacher with my own young kids, so regularly surrounded by germs). Healthy eating and fresh air aside, I take the following daily:

High strength vitamin D (in winter)
Vitamin C with zinc
Daily probiotic
Daily omega 3

It isn’t foolproof (I had an awful bug in December which ended up being norovirus), but touch wood, no colds!

Your gut microbiome is an important part of your immune system. You can help it by eating kefir, miso paste and sauerkraut and other fermented foods and drinks. Also try to increase the range of fruit and veg you eat. It’s quite easy to do it by adding pulses, more herbs and spices plus also nuts and seeds to meals (tip: buy bags of mixed seeds and nuts). Aim for 30 different plants each week.

I often use miso paste where I previously used stock cubes. For breakfast, instead of porridge, I have chia seed pudding - which is chia seeds soaked overnight in kefir, with nuts, seeds and a bit of fruit. I often add cinammon or cacao.

Other thoughts: Possibly wash your hands more often, consider wearing a mask, avoid crowded indoor unventilated places when you can.

Take vitamin D, get out for a walk in the daylight each day and eat as well as you can.

This is why I feel so annoyed; I've improved my diet so much in the last few years once I've learned about gut health, have way over 30 plants a week and no UPF.
I am going to invest in some of the products recommended here. I've never taken supplements as always believed i could get what I needed naturally

Definitely Echinacea! Swear by it. You have to catch it early.
Take it the first inkling or if you've been in contact with someone with a cold

Damnd · 15/02/2026 18:15

I know they say vitamin c doesn't help colds so much but I stand by it and if I feel a cold coming I drink fresh orange by the gallon and I always wake up fine.. shrug

Ah supplements - the main ones to take are magnesium and vitamin D. Most people in the UK are deficient unless they take supplements.
