Does this sound like vertigo?

Morning all, last week I had that horrid cold virus that's been doing the rounds (not entirely convinced it wasn't COVID). Since Tuesday this week I've been having increasing dizzy spells. These started at first when I was lay down and changing sides in bed - I'd switch from my side to my back for example and the room would feel like it was spinning, same sensation as when you've had a few drinks! Initially it was mainly affecting me in the morning but would ease throughout the day. But since yesterday I've started to feel it when I bend down or stand up. The spinning feeling is also now making me feel incredibly nauseous - to the point I felt like I was going to vomit last night. It's definitely worse during the night/early hours but seems to be increasing. Does this sound like vertigo? I've never had it before but someone at work mentioned it can follow a cold. My ears don't feel particularly bunged up but not sure if that matters! Also, potentially unrelated but just in case, I've also not had a period for 2 months (definitely NOT pregnant). Have suffered from PCOS but since having my two DC I had been pretty regular again - up until the last two months.

Thanks for your help!

Look up the Epley Manoeuvre on you tube. It may help

Mullaghanish · 14/02/2026 07:49

It’s horrible.. could be bppv which is benign and needs that eply manoeuvre, or could be viral like mine. They say exercises vestibular rehab can help .. lots on you tube.. My fabulous GP figured out it was the herpes cold sore virus in my ear causing mine.. and gave me acyclovir which clears it up in 48 hrs.. I was so sick.. poor you

You do need to go to GP, a CT. Is often done to rule out any thing sinister (rare) but it’s mostly benign

I think due to you not having had a period for 2 months, it may be worthwhile getting a blood test, your dizziness maybe down to low iron, low blood pressure, low sugar. My DH has suffered from vertigo a few times, but he has a perforated eardrum so anything ear related, can set him off. With him the vertigo is mainly there all the time, medication helps along with anti sickness meds.

Are you in the UK? I have had this maybe half a dozen times, dh has also, plus friends and family and no one I know has had a CT scan!

I get this about every 6 months usually after a migraine. Exactly the same. I always do the Epley manoeuvre as it clears mine. I need to do it every morning both sides for about 3/4 days to clear it . I am in the UK and have had a CT scan and further investigation as it was so debilitating for me ( couldn’t move for the first couple of days as the dizziness was so intense, had to crawl to the loo ). But it just seems to be something I am prone to. And I get awful motion sickness so I think I must just have that tendency and the loose crystals (which cause vertigo) you have my sympathies!!

TeainanIV · 14/02/2026 10:33

Thanks all for the advice! It definitely sounds like labyrinthitis - I knew I could count on Mumsnet!! It's awful! Definitely seems to be worse at night and early morning, maybe a build up? The nausea is awful 🤢. I'll get an appointment with the GP on Monday and see what they say

Try Sturgeron

Definitely try the Epley manoeuvre. I was told to not take any anti sickness pills with mine, as effectively you're trying to retrain your brain into knowing that the signals from your ears were currently wrong (or something like that!) Hope the GP helps.
